Services have stopped using Platform 6 while the person is being freed (to enable safe access by emergency crews)

Because of this, I believe the 1729 down Marshall (running as a 7 car VLocity) ran non stop through North Melbourne account Platform 6 being the only 7 car platform available on the down.

Not sure if Platform 4 is still being used or not; I'd imagine not though; it'd be a nightmare if you had passengers and trains in and out whilst trying to free someone/have ambulance crews etc. ready on the opposite platform. Channel 7's footage of the train and emergency crews was taken from the Footscray end concourse at the top of the ramps, so I take it 4's closed as well.

Train delays after man hit by locomotive

Train services have been delayed this afternoon after a 30-year-old man had both his legs severed when he was hit by a locomotive at North Melbourne station.

Police said the man was hit shortly after 5pm by the V/Line locomotive, which was not carrying passengers at the time.

A spokesman for V/Line said trains running through the station - to Bendigo, Ballarat Sseymour and Geelong - had been delayed by up to 15 minutes.

Platforms four and five at North Melbourne were cordoned off while ambulance officers and firefighters attended to the man.

The V/Line delays were flowing through to some Connex services. The Sydenham, Werribee, Williamstown, Upfield and Cragieburn lines are all funnelled through North Melbourne.

Unknown! Both the papers say 30 year old man, Seven news says 15 year old boy. Will have to wait and see when something authorative (i.e. police or ambulance media release) comes out; or until all media sources get the same story.

I was on the 1729 and I can confirm we did not stop at NTH MELB and we used another platform to go trough.  However we also were not permitted to leave SCS till at least 5 mins after regular time, as they told us they were trying to identify whether any platforms would be available to allow us to pass.  If the answer had been "no" it would have been interesting to watch them ask 7 carriages of V/Locity commuters dissembark.

Speaking of which the conductor informed us of the incident by saying: "An accident has occurred at North Melbourne station involving a tresspasser".

When we went past, it looked grim from some of the emergency worker's faces.

Latest from The Age states the guy lost both legs, and a tarp has been erected.  So far reports of his age are 15, 25 and 30.

Terrible news Sad

I was on the 1655, and we did leave late (a bit after 1700, arrived about 15min late too), but my mum was on the 1736, and was ~20min late.

I hope he pulls through, despite the stupidity of riding a bike on the platform.

A man in his 40s has died after being hit by a locomotive at North Melbourne station.

Police said the man had been riding his bike on the platform about 5.15pm, and appeared to have fallen onto the tracks and into the path of a V/Line locomotive.

Emergency workers battled to save the man, whose legs had been severed, but he died.

The incident sent train schedules into disarray this afternoon. It took more than an hour to extricate the man from under the train.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner on the man's death.

A MAN has died after being trapped under a train after falling from his bike at North Melbourne station.

The man, believed to be 25, was hit by a V-Line train about 5.15pm after he lost his balance and fell off the platform.

A police spokesman said the man, who was freed just before 7pm but died shortly afterwards, had been riding a bike along platform five when he collided with another commuter and was knocked onto the tracks into the path of an oncoming train.

A spokesman said the man, who had been conscious while pinned under the train, had been trapped under the front wheel.

Emergency crews had erected tarps around the area to prevent commuters viewing the scene.

Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman Liana Cross said the man was trapped under the train for more than 90 minutes.

C'mon. Riding a bike on a railway platform at a busy station in peak hou!.

This guy, whatever his age, was behaving irresponsibly and asking for trouble.

And he got it!

Sad but true.

He is not deserving of any sympathy.

That's a little harsh. He's an idiot riding a bike on a platform, but that doesn't mean he deserved to die like that. There's a difference between being an idiot and being a knob. He was stupid, but he was not being a knob. A knob best describes trespassers, people who board via the gangway, etc. and we generally have laws to keep people from being knobs. Stupidity however should not carry the death penalty.

Man fights for life after falling under train

Posted 1 hour 36 minutes ago

   * Map: North Melbourne 3051

A man is fighting for his life after being trapped under a train for two hours.

Police had earlier said the man died soon after being freed from under the train at North Melbourne Station, after being told by emergency crews the man's heart had stopped.

The man's legs became trapped when he fell from the platform just after 5:00pm (AEDT) this evening.

Heavy specialist equipment was used to free the man, and a surgical team was on standby to treat him on the platform.

John Crossman from Ambulance Victoria says crews managed to revive the man and he is now undergoing surgery.

"He was moved from the platform to the ambulance," he said.

"Subsequent to that his heart stopped beating for a period of time, and it was necessary that CPR be commenced.

"He was given additional drugs to try and keep him going so that we could get him to hospital."

Earlier reports say the man trapped under the train died, however he was revived at the scene and remains in hospital in a serious condition. The story has been amended to reflect this.

Hopefully he will make it.

Not to belittle the seriousness of this guys situation, at least if you were catching a train from North Melbourne tonight you wouldn't get the run around if 4, 5 & 6 were all closed!

So was the man in his 40s? Or 25?  Confused
