Y 133 and the 4 E pass cars (15AE, 18BE, 20 BE and 2 BCE) arrived into Castlemaine just before 20.00.
B 74 arrived light engine from Melbourne at 21.30 and the transfer from VGR tracks to the mainline was soon underway.
Train returned to Melbourne at 22.30.
Pheonics was in attendance and looks to have some great pics. He will post them in this or a new post shortly.

Cheers, Murray

Great shots Les, I drove up to Castlemaine to get some shots. Here is my view of the night.

A VERY! rare sight, B74 sitting in 4rd with the rake of E cars waiting to be transferred.

What I called the 'Haunted Express', as B74 heads the consist at Castlemaine. The cars at night were almost as spooky as the stories about the B itself. Especially passing by with no windows and no passengers.   Shocked

B74 waits with the transfer train in Castlemaine 'VGR' yard. [I received permission by the Castlemaine Signalman to enter the pit as long as I didn't stand on the tracks]

B74 now in Platform 2 prior to departure.

15BE sitting in front of Castlemaine A signal box.

An hour and a half later.

B74 after running around at Sunshine prior to departing for Seymour.

The consist sitting in Platform 1 at Sunshine.

Prior to departing for Seymour.

Forgive me if it has been asked before, but what was the reason for the carriages going to Seymour?

Great photos to both Lowndes/J515 and Pheonics.

I think the two of you are very brave to be hanging around Sunshine station late at night taking photos.

The station area and subways are known hotspots for bashings, stabbings and robberies.

There was even a murder there in peak hour one afternoon back in the mid 1990's.

A lot of ethnic gangs frequent the area.

Good to see that you both came away unscathed!

Regards,

Robert.

very nice photos all. Sounds like SRHS has a bit of work on its plate at present. All the elz lease monies going to work - exactly how it I suspect was supposed to happen.

SRHS got enough room in their yard? the F must be getting a workout shunting stuff about.

What the hell is an SRHS? Do you mean SRHC? Which stands for Seymour Railway Heritage Centre!

You're simply assuming this, never assume anything!

More than enough room available, with an on-going project of installing more sidings there will be plenty of room.

The transfer of the four E cars to Seymour is part of a recent project operating under the auspices of "The Carriage Collective." The intentions are obviously to collect and restore carriages, which makes them available for mainline use with the mainline preservation operators. As figured out by now the storage and eventual restoration work is carried out by the SRHC.

Great photos Les and Daniel. B74 in the West yard is a timeless scene, IIRC it has been 20 years since something that size had traversed that section.

Now Maldon yard will have some room for some of those wagons currently at Muckleford.  Razz

Wow, I live not far from the Cmaine to Maldon line and did not hear the move.

Did they need some special permission to connect the VGR line to the main line?

Who owns the carriages and why are they going to Seymour for restoration and not being done at Maldon?

Do they have to pass a "roadworthy" to be allowed out on the mainline?

thanks in advance.

As it wasn't really a heavy train it wouldn't have made much noise.

Did they need some special permission to connect the VGR line to the main line?

Yes. about 125 years ago when they built the line.    oh you meant safeworking wise.. haha.. Absolute Occupation working.

Who owns the carriages and why are they going to Seymour for restoration and not being done at Maldon?

The state owns them and are allocated to the VGR.  IIRC.  Funds & Facilities are preventing them from being done at Maldon.

Do they have to pass a "roadworthy" to be allowed out on the mainline?

Correct.

thanks in advance.

Not a problem.

According to my notes and the VGR timechart on the website the VGR in fact owns the cars:

http://www.vgr.com.au/timechart/timechart1979.htm

They were purchased ~1980 for $100 each. As was the case with many items acquired at the time, CMR members donated the money for the cost of the cars.

Shouldn't that be 18AE and 15BE  Question
  VBAndy Chief Commissioner

I'll happily stand corrected, but I believe the only rollingstock at the VGR not owned by the VGR are Tambo, Lowanna and two PL cars.

If they are allocated to the VGR, who gets the revenue from them once out on the mainline & is it going to take as long as it did for them to get T333 out there and running again ?

And....why couldnt the AE be done at Maldon ?  All it originally needed a few years ago was a change of wheels and it would have been back in the VGR's useable rolling stock fleet again.
Why soley the E cars anyway ?...Whats the story with the others that sit in their yard that have been dormant for years ?
  K160 Minister for Railways

The wheels on 18AE were changed over with a replacement set back in June.

One of those dormant cars (41BU) is currently undergoing external restoration. The interior is in pretty good nick, just need to put the lower half of the seats back in. With the E cars gone, the only stored car now is 25BCPL. Those who have seen this car will know why!  Sad

Possibly because the E cars are more suited to mainline tour operations?

What about 25ABU? It was still in the yard a few months ago when I was last up there.

Woops. You are correct. It is a more realistic restoration project than the BCPL IMO.

There is also the underframe and bogies of 51ABU at Muckleford. The underframe now upside down in the grass.

If the E cars are more suited to mainline operations maybe TAMBO & LAWANA should have been included in the consist as well.

Tambo and Lowana are privately owned..... Up to the owner where they go.
