http://www.actpla.act.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0015/6441/East_Lake_Draft_Planning_Report.pdf shows a range of options but it looks like the railway will be shortened to the minimum, one option on page 59 even removes the railway from the ACT altogether.
Reading the report, the need to retain the historical aspects greatly overweighs the need to service an intercity service to Sydney.
The VFT is considered, though the route which was abandoned is shown (via Cooma) and there is an inferred desire to move the station to a transit centre at the airport.
Chorus; lets get rid of the rail reserve and develop it, move the station to the boondocks, who cares where.

I,m thinking that some truth in what you are saying. I for one would not like to see the line vanish off the face of the earth but the current Govt is hell bent on getting all the land they can get for their master plans. Whilst this is not really new News, things have not worked in the favor of the line. It would be sad to see the AHRS moving to an site which is not puts them is an area that is unsuitable for them and the public at large. The airport group are certainly got some musclein Canberra and it remains to be seen what actually happens in the long term.

You're referring to such events as the proposal to relocate the station that was suggested a number of years ago Question.

Yes it does. I believe it's the sole freight service that uses the line regularly.

The latter part of that statement is open for correction.

Ben

That's about to end. There was a story on WIN news (Canberra) last night about Shell closing their Fyshwick depot, and the fuel will go by road instead.

I do think that questions about the passenger service remaining are justified if there is no freight to run on the line. Buses from Goulburn, perhaps.

It runs Tuesdays and Thursdays and sometimes Saturdays... but I haven't seen a Saturday train for a long time.

Usually gets in to Fyshwick around 4am, stables at Canberra Yard around 10am and then leave just before 6pm.

Can anyone update as to when the last service will be?

As for freight on the line... the entire branch is down to one freight service: the garbage train to Tarago.

It seems high-time to now push a new rail link down the federal highway into the heart of Canberra and buy some new DMUs capable of slotting in amongst the freight... a few extra passing loops past Goulburn wouldn't hurt either.

According to an e-mail on the grapevine yesterday, no more Saturdays.

According to the same e-mail, Tuesday & Thursday until the end of November. Once a week during December & January, if required during depot shutdown.

It would appear as though Canberra residents are scheduled to tolerate a similiar situation Rolling Eyes to Murwillumbah.

Why would Canberra residents take the train (I'm assuming to Sydney - $40), unless you're on a concession? 4 hours, when Murrays/Greyhound offer 3 hour services, via Airport if you want, for $15-30 - faster and cheaper?

It's simply not competitive, and I would be interested to see their patronage figures and breakdown of ticket type.

Moving to a coach service, if it doesn't stop at every town on the way, might even increase patronage (if that's the intention, as opposed to just offering a 'social coverage/access' style service).

We need to start asking why rail's not competitive. In this case, I guess the roads between Campbelltown and Canberra have been upgraded to highway/freeway speeds whereas rail has not had little investment to Canberra. The line hasn't been straightened nor brought up to high speed standards.

Maybe if these rail lines were brought up to high speed standards and industries encouraged to set up near rail lines, more freight and passenger traffic would follow.

Countrylink ran a competing coach against its own train servoice in the 1990s and dispite the cheaper fares and faster schedule it failed miserably with coaches running nearly empty and passengers riding past their destination. People prefered the comfort of train travel.

What I would suggest is realigning the line or building a new faster between Goulburn and Canberra so as to improve the travel times (I was surprised to see that the line between Goulburb and our national capital resembled a mountainside branchline).

Keep Melbourne W class tram with trolley poles
Bring the 3900s back to Brisbane
Bring Karlsruhe Tramtrains to Australian cities
Extend the proposed Metro to Taylor Square
Extend the Gold Coast line to the Northern Rivers
Bring loco hauled sleeping cars back to NSW
Build a VHST network between the eastern capitals
Bring long distance trains back to North Terrace

They might decide in favour of rail travel owing to passenger comfort and the opportunity to stroll through their carriage when their legs become cramped. Or purely to demonstrate their support for the existing service.
