The grain train was in the yard at Benalla this afternoon at 1645 waiting for clearance to get on the East line. The locomotives were EL 52 leading on the way north G521 leading going south. G521 must be getting to know the line well by now.
Rails are starting to take on a bit of a polish.

Hi Group,                              Sept 25th, 10, 22:40 Hrs. M.D.T.

Some interesting questions for the Oakland Branch Line.
How did this Line fair with all the recent Rain? Any Flooding or
         near flooding etc?
While there has been some Discussions about Coal
Mining and Resource Developement - Gas, Methaine Gas?
Was wondering if anyone might have a few Updates.

Be interesting to know why they ran around the EL?
Perhaps it was because the EL  was facing North as Woodford seems to be saying.   Which would answer my question.
Woodford is learning "Railway Parlance" Mr trainee, so we cut him a lot of slack here in this thread  Wink  I understood what he said he really should have left out the word  "leading" which probably means movement, when in fact he was only describing the way the Locos sat at Benalla awaiting departure.

Looks as though all grain has been cleared from the AWB site at Yarrawonga but there still appears to be 10 to 15,000 tons at AWB in Oaklands to be moved. They will have to get a move on the new season approachs swiftly.

Also there was (last week) still grain to be cleared from Murchison east (on the GV line).

I've recently started working in the area and I'm on the road a lot and have the opportunity to visit the line when ever I feel like it.

I was wondering if anyone could advise of train movements on the line so I might be able to get some shots.

Thanks in advance.

CM5 should be loading at Oaklands today with G533-S300-T386.

Hi Group,                                    Oct 11th, 10, 21:50 Hrs. M.D.T.

With the future prospects of Coal Deposits in the Oaklands area being developed in the next three years along with possible CBM Deposits as well, what are the chances of the Oakland Branch being rebuilt to acomodate the heavier rail required, possible concrete ties plus perhaps longer sidings that will need to be built.
I base my questions on the possibilities of several coal trains per day on the branch at close to 100 cars each, plus being used to transport Methane Gas as well. If the coal fields are in a large areas I would be looking at the chances of the branch being expanded to tap into the fields to the north and west of Oaklands.
With the Branch handling grain trains for the time being, I see a brighter future in terms of expanded rail to devellope Mineral Deposits that are worth taking seriously in both N.S.W. and the Victoria side of the border.

It departed Oaklands at around 1530 and is currently approaching Seymour.

Well that's unfortunate. I'd have driven to Yarra today to catch it come through.

Could not find train operating data at all for the branch line on the ARTC website, who I thought now lease the line.

Of course, the only North East train numbers available on the V/Line website are now for the Goulburn Valley line, as they no longer look after the Albury line.

When this Thread as such was dealing with the branch being converted to S.G. Others took some Excellent Photos of the work being done. Was just wondering if anyone has taken or up dated the branch with some good Quality photos etc.
Not Living in the regions, be interested to see how the branch is looking and how the operations are going.

I did take a few pics of one of the first grain trains on the branch but haven't been back since:

Given the fast population growth in Yarrawonga, V-Line should seriously consider at least a daily passenger service on this line.  My 2 cents.

Hmmmmmmmmm, Say I nice 3 car VLocity to Southern Cross from Yarra would add much needed seating capacity from Benalla south on the Albury line, can not see it happenning any time soon though, sadly, would cost a fortune in switching and signalling at Benalla to allow the train to access the main platform, not to say there being no SG VLocity's.

The line itself is looking very nice, they must have done a second pass of lifting and lining from Benalla through to Oaklands, made the line look very impressive. Unfortunately it's nearly a 400 kilometer round trip to Oaklands from Benalla makes chasing trains expensive, the other problem being no/little warning of when the trains are running to allow one to take some shots.

Hi There,                                  Oct 18th, 10, 21:15 Hrs. M.D.T.

That Station at Benalla looks  very nice. Can't speak for the other stations on route between Albury to Seymour but this station looks to be well maintained etc. Is there still a Agent/Operater at the station?
If "Train Orders" are the rule for the time being, are they issued at the station, or is it all done by Radio, Orders being a Clearence plus Orders as I understood the Operations when I learned "TT & TO Operations Years Ago.

Yes, it is manned from monday to Saturday.  The interior of the building has been redone not to long ago, the counter area was moved a good distance towards Albury making the waiting area much larger.

Can be done either by a signaller or by radio. Not sure what the situation is on the west line.

The station staff at Benalla are closer to the concept of an 'agent' - they merely service the passengers and have no operational role.

Incidentally, Australian train orders are nothing like US Timetable and Train Order operation. The timetable gives no authority to occupy track, there is no concept of superiority, and all trains are given explicit authority to occupy tracks. Consequently there is no need to give a clearance.

Anyone know where I can get the Freight Schedules? I've had a look around on the ARTC website, no luck.

Hmmm, morning railmotor departs Benalla at 11:15am daily, same time as the Tatong mixed.  Arrives Yarrawonga 2:05pm Mon/Tue, 1:27pm other days.  The evening railmotor departs Benalla 7:41pm arriving at Yarrawonga 9:42pm.  Not sure about freight or mixed trains to Yarrawonga or Oaklands...

Oh - hang on - that was in 1928...

The trains seem to run as needed at present.  A lot of grain is being trucked to AWB Grainflow at Oaklands, I guess that has to go somewhere sometime.

We may have scheduled coal trains out of Oaklands in 2013/2014?

Sorry I might be totally off track here.

But I didn't think that ARTC ran the line up to Oaklands I though it was still classed as a regional victorian route. And the up grade of this line was done by the victorian authority not ARTC.
