Route 96 - B2 Class - A Taste of the Past

Noticed that everyday this week, route 96 is being run by 1-2 B2 Class Trams, from Essendon Depot, Preston Depot and Camberwell Depot.
Some B2s also operate Southbank operated 112 services

So far this week (on separate days), trams 2004, 2017, 2033(last week), 2038(last week), 2061, 2063, 2070, 2080, 2103(last week) and 2112.
The Essendon cars seem to return to Essendon mid way through the day as they can be later tracked to Essendon routes. After this time, either Preston or Camberwell cars take over.

What is the reasoning for these irregular happenings that remind one of the old days when the 96 was operate B2s?

P.S. Kew Depot often provides Cs as well.

RMIT Exam trams.

YT scheduled extra services on Tram 96 and shuttles between Lonsdale Street and Middle Park to cater for the extra crowds attending RMIT exams at MSAC.

I must say, it was a nice change to get a proper Light Rail vehicle on the 96 again.

Poor saps at RMIT - my exams finished weeks ago!

On Tuesday June 22 I noticed a number of trams short-shunting at the corner of Spencer and Lonsdale Streets:

I see... no wonder I saw multiple B2s along Nicholson Street before my exams at REB T_T. But anyway they are over!

You sure you just weren't seeing 86's up until Gertrude??

Nah I was walking down from Elgin Street, saw the Route 96 destos. Slow and painful walk to doom.

I saw a B2 coming up the St Kilda line shortly after 13:00 this afternoon. After contemplating that they couldn't be running route 96 because of the exams, I saw three trams from the other end of the alphabet.

It turns out that route 16 was running along the St Kilda line and route 3 was running along the Port Melbourne line.

The work at Clarendon and Park streets doesn't explain it either.

There was a breakdown at St Kilda junction that lasted for about an hour - A combino broke at the shunt and it took the mechanics about an hour to get it moving again. From what I hear, they had to get it onto a dolly for the transhipment back to Malvern.

3a, 64 and 67 were being diverted via Glen Ferrie Road and High Street, while the 16 and a few lone 3a's were being diverted via the light rail and spencer st to Latrobe street.

Is it just me, or is there an increasing trend for Combino's to have the Gearbox just totally and utterly break down, causing major delays?

Even older than B2.....

As we left Toy Story 3 on Sunday afternoon, Z3 208 on a 96 service was snapped inbound in Clarendon Street at Jeff's Shed (sorry about quality, but it was a quick grab on a Blackberry).

A few minutes later an errant 3504 on a route 16 service rumbled over the exemplary track-work at Crown (you always have plenty of time for watching trams when waiting for a 109 - possibly the worst service in Melbourne).

This morning B2s 2021, 2039 and 2052 were on route 96 and this afternoon/evening 2052 was the only B2.
C.3007 was also on the 96 today.

I think I may know why they are doing this: Several D2s might be out of service due to Mk 4 livery/Structural Modifications. From what I can tell:
5002, 5007, 5008 are out of service and 5011, 5017 and 5021 seem to take it in turns slipping over to Malvern

D 5010 was the tram that broke down, initially in Fitzroy St then later at St.Kilda Jnc blocking the shunt. The problem wasn't gearbox related, more of a control system failure with locked disc brakes, mechanics brought forward D 5017 from Malvern depot for towing.

I think 208 on the 96 was really a diverted route 3a service due to a breakdown at St.Kilda Jnc.

Nah, that would go to the far end of route 16 to the Kew Terminus. Half-hour waits during the daytime service are not uncommon.

Seems to be a regular occurrence now: Today 2021, 2123 and C.3007

Yes, it does say "Melbourne University" rather than "Brunswick East".

I thought that it might be route 16 with the first digit hidden behind the air-conditioning unit. However, a close look suggests that the first digit is a 9.

Z class aren't really allowed in regular services on the light rail.
