Hi guys,

what do you think about my repaint of this train ?

I guess many of you are familiar with the base model. It goes back to the early days of the MSTS, but since it is the only model I found of the Shinkansen 500 series, I decided to give it a shot and update its textures a little bit.

Since the whole waggons are painted on the aces, the *.ace sizes were critical if I wanted to add some new details. So I decided to increase the size from the original 512x512 up to 4096x4096 ! And guess what ? It works like a charm ! Only ShapeViewer won't display anything at all, but in the MSTS it runs smoothly !

This could be important for other repainters and model-builders as well - some people think that 1024x1024 was the "limit" of MSTS, but my repaint proves that 4096x4096 is not a problem, either !

A couple of pictures:

I'd like to add real lights and a second CabView soon.

I like the use of photo textures but to be frank I would have expected sharper lines and crisper definition from 4096x4096 textures. I suspect the issue is with the original photo images you have used for your textures. Either they are not sharp to begin with or the quality of the image has degraded when expanded to fill out to 4096 pixels, therefore the extra texture size does not provide any benefit to the quality of final render.

The photos I used were not that sharp and of low resolution. For them I wouldn't have needed 4096x4096, but I hope to find better pictures soon. Nevertheless, the repaint is just in the prototype stage and I will probably use the current textures as a map to replace them bit by bit with higher resolution windows, doors etc. For some details, like the digital displays on the waggon or the inscriptions I already made good use of the high resolution - they were not on the original "background" photos !

Most of all, however, the 4096x4096 textures here are a proof of concept. There is no 1024x1024-limit in MSTS, neither theoretical nor practical.

I just made a test drive on the Chinese CJ2-route.

As it seems, the three large 4096x4096 textures used in the train do not have any negative implications for the performance of MSTS - throughout the route I had framerates between 37 and 57 fps !    Surprised

So there's no need to be afraid of large texture sizes.

PS:

My system: Athlon 64 3500+, 2.5Gb RAM, 512Mb Ati HD4350 graphics card, 2Tb data HDD.

My MSTS settings: All sound and graphics options maxed out, 1600x1200 32bit true color @ 75Hz. BinPatch installed. /mem:2048 has been set.
