Boyer, Bridgewater & beyond (Southern Tas.)

Location: Drowning in accreditation red tape!
All,

For a few years I have collated monthly sightings of Tasrail movements in the vicinity of Boyer (my workplace, Norske Skog Paper Mill), Bridgewater (near home at Granton) and beyond (hence the title) and posted them on some of the Yahoo Groups I am a member of. It has occurred to me (finally!!) that the "Sightings" forum is an appropriate place to also post them due to the lack of Tasmanian subject matter and that there may be interested readers here that are not members of the various Yahoo Groups I post to.

So for any who are interested, I will commence listing monthly reports in this thread. I may also start another thread for my older reports from last year and earlier to compare changes in motive power and movements, but for now,  the next post will start with a summary of January 2011.

To orientate readers who are not familiar with my home area, the principle area of interest is centered around Bridgewater Junction (c. 18 kms from Hobart) where the line to Hobart from the north of the state crosses the Derwent River and the Derwent Valley Line branchs off to Boyer, the location of the Norske Skog Paper Mill - a major Tasrail customer. Heading south from Bridgewater towards Hobart, common sighting spots are the ex suburban station locations of Granton, Austins Ferry, Claremont, Chigwell and Berriedale. Heading west along the Derwent Valley line, sighting spots are located by proximity to historic stopping places (c. 2 km intervals), Ravenswood, Marshlands, Dromedary, Bundella, Riverton, Swepstones, Ralphs & Boyer. North of Bridgewater, one encounters, Rogerville, Brighton, Tea Tree and Rekuna, prior to reaching Campania.

My sightings are not limited to the areas mentioned, but the above is my most common "hunting ground", so to speak.

So intros, over, the next post will get down to business. Comments, questions always welcome!

Well done - there is nothing like current data as it is the detailed history of tomorrow.

So much on RP lacks precision and detail.

Keep it up, please.

All, My regular monthly round-up of Tasrail sightings in Southern Tas. for May 2011 as follows:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sunday 1st May 2011:
2020+2006+2021 & Train # 1-66 (light engines)
via Bridgewater, 1250h.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Monday 2nd May 2011:

2123 idling with Train # 1-31 Boyer (D.V. main), 0650h.

2007+2008+2009+2011 idling, Boyer station yard

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sunday 8th May 2011:
Occupying the D.V. Main at Boyer, as well as the station yard, this morning at 0700h. were the following;
2100+2131+2134+2004 & Train No. 7-31 - and -
2128.
Yes, 2128 (ex ZB14) was not a misprint. I did a double take when I first spotted it last night and had to go back and check it to make sure I hadn't misread the number! I suspected that 2123 was about to be relieved either for its regular service or requirements on Hobart, on Wednesday morning, when I spotted Train # 4-35 at Rogerville with a 'ZB' dead attached in the loco consist. However, normally one would expect 2122 to do the cover, so discovering 2128 in its place was a surprise. Previously, 2121 has substituted for 2122 as the cover for 2123, so seeing as it seems to be that 2128 has been taken out of storage to replace the mechanically cactus 2121, it is probably not so outlandish to see it back, but I hadn't heard many reports of it in action. I would expect that it would be quite a while since 2128, or any of the remaining high numbered 'ZB's had been to Boyer - or down south for that matter?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Monday 9th May 2011:

Observed 2128 shunting out of Boyer station yard this morning at 0705h.
Accompanied by a large cloud of bluey white smoke!
Proceeded onto the D.V. main and coupled to the consist of Train No. 7-31.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tuesday 10th May 2011:
Two ZB's at Boyer this evening - ZB5 and ZB14
2123 is back at Boyer and together with 2128.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wednesday 11th May 2011:

Present tonight in Boyer station yard at 1900h;

2111+2113 and 2123 all shut down and the station deserted.

Reported that 2128 disappeared on 67/36 last night.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Monday 16th May 2011:
Perfectly timed arrival at Bridgewater this morning;
2111+2114+2113+2112+2006 & Train No. 2-35 [13W (9 loads )]
via Bridgewater, 0719h.
stop Granton, 0726 - 0734h. (Crew change)
via Austin's Ferry, 0742h.
via Berriedale, 0750h.
2111+2114 only powering. 2113+2112+2006 all dead attached.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tuesday 17th May 2011:

Present in Boyer station yard this morning at 0705h.

2101+2133+2100 ex Train # 2-31

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thursday 26th May 2011:
Noted this morning at 0700h;
2113+2112 and 2123 all stabled in Boyer station yard.
All still present at 1900hrs. tonight. Over the last few days, contract track workers have been beavering away at Boyer station yard. The western points to the coal road have been re-sleepered. Interesting that they weren't removed. Tasrail must hold out hope of getting the coal back.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wednesday 1st June 2011:

Noted this morning:

2021+2009+2020 & Train No. 4-35 [17W (No 60'ers)]
standing Bridgewater up outer home from at least (earlier than?) 0715 - 0747h.
Presumably an issue with the route setting electronics?
Heard clearing Bridgewater, 0749h & through Granton, 0754h.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wednesday 8th June 2011:
Boyer yard was unusually crowded tonight;
Reports of flooding on the South Line between Antill Ponds and Woodbury resulted in 32 being turned around and returned to Boyer.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Monday 20th June 2011:
See whilst out for a walk today;
2131+2138+2137+2134 light engines (T# 2-66) via Granton, 1340h.
Seems that for a few motorists, the flashing lights & bells at the Causeway crossing are considered an optional suggestion.
At least one though, had a sudden change of heart when he saw someone standing by the crossing pointing to him and to a pen and piece of paper!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sunday 26th June 2011:

Noted around and about this morning;

2001+2012+2002+2009 & Train # 7-31

via Granton, 0730h.
via Austin's Ferry, 0736h.
via Berriedale, 0743h.

All,

A very quiet July for Tasrail sightings, with me being on holiday for a major part of the period, hence no observations at work and atrocious winter weather that wasn't very conductive to getting out and train chasing!

(* This may or may not be 6-35 finally through, having finally got past last Friday's derailment near Colebrook, as it is not confirmed whether for sure it was last Friday's departure from Burnie or whether the train would have been numbered afresh when it restarted when the line re-opened, which would make it 2-35 )

Location: Drowning in accreditation red tape!

All,

The recent lack of updates and lack of sightings data for late March / April is a result of me being on holidays and absent from the state in W.A. for much of the period.

Nevertheless, following is what I did note going on in Southern Tas. during early March:

******************************************************************************************************************************

Friday 2nd March 2012;

On my way to work this morning;

2012+2132+2134+2008 & Train No. 635

via Bridgewater, 0632h.

2021+2005+2020 & Train No. 531

stabled, D.V. main east end Boyer station, 0650h.

****************************************************************************************************************************

Saturday 3rd March 2012;

Boyer station yard tonight;

2122 back in the yard with 2123

Boyer, 1900h.

2021+2005+2020 & Train No. 631

stabled D.V. main, east end of station, 2145h.

****************************************************************************************************************************

Monday 5th March 2012;

Noted today;

2008+2134+2132 & Train # 266 [light engines]

stopped Granton, 1347 - 1351hrs.

**************************************************************************************************************************

Thursday 8th March 2012;

Noted at Boyer this morning (also sighted last night);

2122 stabled; 2123 idling prior to commencing shunt.

Boyer station yard, 0700h.

Later from home;

2133+2008+2134+2132 & Train No. 466 (light engines)

via Granton, 1420h

*****************************************************************************************************************************

Friday 9th March 2012;

A very positive and promising sighting at Boyer this morning;

FEP318/E+FEP307/K+QS59/P

standing in the station yard, 0930h.

The two 'FEP's are freshly overhauled and painted, whilst the 'QS' is fitted with log bolsters.

These would be the first log wagons to be seen at Boyer since some time after early February 2006, when PN killed the log traffic to Boyer with the cessation of Trains 43/44.

I am hoping to soon see the resumption of log traffic to Boyer!

********************************************************************************************************************************

Sunday 11th March 2012;

Seen between home and work this morning;

2134+2132+2008+2133 & Train No. 735 [23W (inc. 1 X 60'er)]

via Granton, 0632h.

2006+2020+2004+2012 & Train No. 731

stabled D.V. main, east end Boyer station, 0650h.

2122 & 2123

Boyer station yard.

*********************************************************************************************************************************

Sunday 18th March 2012;

Noted yesterday at work;

2133+2008+2132+2134 & Train No. 731

stabled, D.V. main, east end Boyer station, 0650h.

2123 in station yard. (2122 gone)

*********************************************************************************************************************************

No further sightings for March or for April.

Cheers,

Steve Z.

Sunday 27th May 2012:

Unusually nothing was present at Boyer this morning other than resident, 2123. Would normally have expected to see Train No. 7-31 from last night.

However, present tonight was;

2137+2131+2051+2003 & Train No. 7-31 (very late?) or 1-31?

stabled Boyer station yard (train attached & trailing out onto main), 1845h.

******************************************************************************************************************************

Thursday 31st May 2012:

Whilst out and about yesterday I noted the following;

2137 stabled, 2021+2131+2051+2003 idling,

Hobart Top Yard, 1315h.

Wednesday 14th November 2012:

On my way home from work this morning, I decided to go have a look at the newly opened section of the Brighton Bypass. On my way back, I took a quick trip out to Tea Tree to see if 335 was anywhere close.....

I indeed found a train at Tea Tree, but facing northbound and obviously waiting for 335. I had discovered the new Train No. 34, which is a new service scheduled out of Hobart around 0600hrs and forms the return to East Tamar Junction of the new additional southbound working, Train No. 33, which now arrives in Hobart around 0300hrs.  Anyway, details....
