Just came across this.

V/Line is seeking responses from rail accredited bidders for the purchase of a Road Transferable Locomotive (RTL) on an as-is, where-is basis. The RTL is a 475 horsepower Western Star truck chassis which has been modified to include retractable rail wheels and rail equipment.

Interesting, I thought this was owned by PN. Or was it not included in the package when they bought Freight Australia?

Seems odd for V/line to be selling it regardless...  Question

I was thinking the same thing.

AFAIK, V/Line are the only rail operator to have drivers qualified to drive the RTL on both road and rail.

Should it sell, it'll need a lot of work, it tears up bitumen because of the weight, and has a Vicroads exemption because of said weight. One company that could do well in having it would be Coleman rail, as the current Hi rail prime mover they have would be getting pretty long in the tooth.
Guess the real issue though would be training blokes up on how to use the thing, as it can be connected up pneumatically to any piece of rollingstock with an auto coupler. Not to mention that it is still classified as a locomotive when on the rails.

Anyone know what has come of this? The tender page does not work anymore (Link is dead).

It was still sitting in the same spot at South Dynon on September 18th.

I hope it does not stay like this for much longer. It would be nice to see it wandering around vic again (not that it wandered too far and wide previously!).

would be an interesting beast to see out and about on the rails again. not sure that will happen. if anything, life as a yard unit or shunter would be about it.

For mine, the RTL seems to be a classic example of one of those beaut ideas that sound like the answer in theory, but prove to be somewhat less so in practice.... Sad

And I go past today and they've moved it out into the open:

Looks like it is missing its draw gear.

Did anyone purchase it?
I was thinking it could go to a cashed up iron ore operator as a maintenance workshop play thing, however any sensible workshop manager would go for a trackmobile.

Can anyone provide an update on the status of the RTL?  Has it moved yet?

Thanks

The RTL has no connection to NSW, so why would a NSW preservation group care?  Unless they were making poor attempts at trolling gunzels.

After looking at the tender documents it is state it could run either broad or standard gauge railway so Dorrigo could be a proposition that could be entertained!

The road transferable locomotive Is NOT a NSWGR machine.

So Dorrigo can go out the window.

The machine would most likely be picked up by a railway construction company to help with building new Infrastructure.

My thinking if cheap enough it could be useful for a museum such as Dorrigo etc to shuffle exhibits around with out having to fire up a loco and then run down to the shops to buy lunch. In that case it would not matter where it came from, after all they are a Canadian concept.

How many Kms would it have on it? not many I would think. Would make a good town semi or yard tank for an operator. would need bogie axels put back under it. $20k max i would think for it.

Around 14:30 today I spotted the RTL in a driveway in Blackshaws Rd Altona North (north side, just east of Hansen St). Nose pointing towards the road, hatches open, "Freight Australia" in plain view.  The driveway was next to a house, with another prime mover nearby (truckie at home with a new collectible?).
