Road Transferable Locomotive (RTL) news

Around 14:30 today I spotted the RTL in a driveway in Blackshaws Rd Altona North (north side, just east of Hansen St). Nose pointing towards the road, hatches open, "Freight Australia" in plain view. The driveway was next to a house, with another prime mover nearby (truckie at home with a new collectible?).

The house with the dump truck with dog trailer? - he looks like an owner operator.
My first thought is conversion to dump truck

Not sure about the dump truck - the property is no. 178 Blackshaws Rd.  The RTL is still there today.

Another one for Dorrigo???

   Anything goes up at Dorrigo.
It could be added to the collection as an "exhibit" that would represent something that may have been purchased by the SRA for use in NSW, or it may have been driven through NSW at some stage for a tyre change, thus making it historically correct for addition to the Dorrigo Museum.

Yesterday afternoon I heard "RTL 1" on the scanner do a radio test on frequency 418.300 which covers the Appleton Dock area. I had a brief look at the docks today but couldn't locate it anywhere.

well thats a surprise. Wouldent have thought that it would have seen railway use again, however it does seem that it might just have some time left on the rails. Last photos i saw of it had most of its rail gear removed. These photos seem to suggest a future on rail still is there.

"RTL 1" is now owned by a construction company called Just Track Pty Ltd, they're based locally in Yarraville. The cab sides have adhesives applied with a name and contact telephone number.

Sounds like it has a future in the rail industry yet. A quick ACN search has them based on Mackay QLD, so as they have a local office perhaps they have some local contracts. Cant immediately find a website to see what they do and how much of it they do. i guess we will all see in time.

Went out and had a sticky beek today for RTL1. Found it and the K100 working north of Curtis Road Smithfield. The K100 is working the down track and RTL1 is working the up track.

A pic of RTL1 from today can be seen at the following link..

I note that the air compressor is now a portable unit on hire:

I thought that was an electricity generator although I don't see why they would need one. The RTL's original compressor is attached but perhaps it is non functional?

The previously used Colman hirail truck also had a portable compressor on board.
Most likely answer is the RTL's compressor is sufficent for braking, but not able to also supply enough compressed air to operate the ballast hopper discharge doors.

Sounds most likely.

Any news on how it is going? Still working where it was last reported?

AFAIK, V/Line are the only rail operator to have drivers qualified to drive the RTL on both road and rail. Should it sell, it'll need a lot of work, it tears up bitumen because of the weight, and has a Vicroads exemption because of said weight. One company that could do well in having it would be Coleman rail, as the current Hi rail prime mover they have would be getting pretty long in the tooth. Guess the real issue though would be training blokes up on how to use the thing, as it can be connected up pneumatically to any piece of rollingstock with an auto coupler. Not to mention that it is still classified as a locomotive when on the rails.
"Highrise"

High weight? it's only got a 24 tonne GVM. That's a whopping 1.5 over the limit for a standard 3-axle truck. The issue is more likely that it runs on super singles, rather than duals.

As for the air compressor, perhaps Just Tracks hasn't refitted the onboard compressor?

Some more shots of it Here
