'Glorified Trainspotting'

This also raises the issue of who would or should have access to the cameras for the purposes of selecting pre-sets and how requests to access the cameras should be queued.

Maybe only users in the railcam group? or have a limit to other users

What is the Railcam group?

maker it simple.  Those people who are at a certain pre-agreed contribution level on the site.  if you are at a level or above you gain better access to the cameras?  those people who leech from the site do not get all the privileges?

Uhh, what? Editing photo titles/descriptions has no bearing on replacing the cameras.

How do you gauge someone's contribution?

You can't do it by forum posts. A lot of people - even some in this thread - post garbage.

What about the people, such as @Raichase, who post irregularly but contribute heavily to other parts of Railpage?

We need to et beyond the trust factor.  Users and users and they (as a member) have access to services on this site.  @Hitachi does raise some good points.  However, it might be only camera managers like @Michelle12 and @Raichase etc have access to the cameras to control movement.  @GheringhapLoop maintains the sightings and also camera updates from his command centre.

I have setup a test camera with ONVIF at home and will be provided the link to michael once the firewall configuration has been completed.

Contributions are across the spectrum here. You can post news, forums, events, loco data, sightings, downloads, railcam metadata and photo comp soon. If you do any of this stuff then you are contributing.

Then were are the people who work with us in the developer forums.  They also help out.

I cannot personally see why any member cannot enter the "control queue' for camera selections.  It is an exciting time.

Yes, thankyou for glossing completely over my post.

What constitutes "trusted"?

The concept of a "trusted" or "contributing" user has been brought up time and time again over the last decade, but nobody has yet answered my question: how do you accurately and fairly measure it?

Exactly.  This is why you need a queue.  Say 2 minutes on the live service per user. Once your time is up the next user in the queue has control.

I really like that. Most clever.

If you click on the placemark can it take you to the railcam site on Railpage?

If you could select a railcam for viewing and then check up and down the line by controlling the camera what a feature!  If you could havea  railcam in the yard you could watch the shunters making up the trains.

What are railcam maintainers?

Hi, i can't make the page go to this page because it is not supported.
Railcam maintains are users whom if there is a false positive delete the photo or add a train number into the photo.

So this is a group who maintain the camera data and the camera stream.  great.

I also wanted to say how impressed I am with the new camera pictures from Bunbury Street.  The images are very clear but they are not close enough the action.  The focal point needs adjustment.  More zoom.

Like always i have the 'Scoop'

On the melbourne wireless page Brian has earmarked some locations for the next webcams.

The locations are

  • West Tower node KNI
  • Ballan node KNJ
  • Lethbridge node KOS
  • Meredith node KOT (In test)
  • Bannockburn node KRF

And there is a mystery node KWI in Carnegie called 'Railpage Operations'

That's the list.

Well here is another scoop.

Look at the links from where I think the new cameras are. http://melbourne.wireless.org.au/maps/view?id=kub shows the radio connections.

Bannockburn would get BG traffic only.  Cool.

Ballan would be a long link unless there is a node already running?

Anyone called the number on the Albion #2 page?
  X'Trapolis-904M Deputy Commissioner

Ballan has not yet got a radio link nor a node.

@bevans can you shed some light to this

As for the phone number i assume it's to move the camera?

X'Trapolis-904M

Ballan will probably not go ahead as it requires multiple radio links due to the terrain.

Phone number is to report issues with the cameras.
