Hi There,
Im thinking of starting a VR mainline layout. dual mainline station, yard etc... was thinking around the 4 x 8 feet mark
any ideas what would work or what real life area could suit this?

You need to determine a few more points before getting to the layout design part.
VR had a very long epoch - so be more specific on what era you would like to model. If you are interested in the 1960s, obviously that rules out the X Class diesels.
Do you want Steam or/and Diesels on your layout? Are you interested in shunting operations or tail-chasing? With tail-chasing, this can get boring very quickly.
So you need to think long and hard what you enjoy from model railways.
Cheers

VR mainline layout. dual mainline station, yard, eh? I know a fellow with a accurately scaled model of Wallan circa 1974 as his home layout, that takes up 27 x 10 feet!
An 8 x 4 footer will have boring looking return curves at each end, but ever long container wagons will make it around okay. Here are some random layout ideas:

As for Victorian locations on double track, you don't have many to pick from out in the country: out from Melbourne to Geelong, Bendigo or Moe.

Why not single track, there's a lot more out there than double track.
