A big escalation of the current dispute

http://www.qantas.com.au/regions/dyn/au/publicaffairs/details?ArticleID=2011/oct11/5218

Pilots, licenced engineers and baggage, ground and catering staff are essential to Qantas operations and the lock-out will therefore make it necessary for all Qantas aircraft to be grounded. For precautionary reasons, this will take place immediately (as at 5pm AEDT, Saturday 29 October 2011).

The Irish smeghead will forever regret this decision... Well, at least until he gets his golden handshake.

To do this; this no-notice, voluntary stranding of tens of thousands of your paying passengers is one of the worst decisions Qantas could have made.

It's one thing to have CASA ground your planes. Is another thing completely to do it yourself. Good luck recovering, you bunch of self-centered asrewipes, you've screwed it yourselves....... Evil or Very Mad

Claiming its about wages, but really its about off shoring 1000 odd jobs.

Screwed both their staff and customers at the same time.

Honestly though, are Qantas management following the instructions in "An Idiots guide to cost cutting (for company directors).".

Only good thing about all this is going to be a really long Overland consist in the next few days.

Qantas is a complete train wreck.  You have an Irishman running the show who is perhaps willing as the unions to fight it out.

Qantas could be gone by xmas.

I highly doubt that as it falls under the esential services acts the Goverment can renationalise it at any time.

It is amazing that QANTAS would cancel all international flights.  What a drama this is going to cause the travelling public and tarnish their remaining brand.

As per person who has travelled on qantas for many years, i will say the service has been slipping and it is no longer the proud airline it once was.

I would not own shares in an airline ever!

This is really where high speed rail could assist the public.  What we need is an alternative.

No government is going to renationalise QANTAS, the "Competive Neutrality Rules" would not allow it to try and make a profit/compete effectively against the competitors on the international routes where the massive losses are occurring.

As for the dumbo's saying how dare Joyce ground the airline, what have the TWU and Engineers been doing? Having picnics or striking? Don't walk off strike mean aircraft are grounded/services stopped?

Now for deep maintenance, is any business owner going to start a new workshop for the A380's or other new aircraft when Airbus/Lufthansa will do it cheaper? Of course not and much as each of us might groan and complain, we are the ones causing it by flying as cheap as we can Air Asia, Etihad, Emirates, Singapore Airlines and so on whilst complaining about the crap service on QANTAS.

The reality is 30 years ago QANTAS had about 40% of the international market share coming to and from Australia and now has about 18%. Now if someone was to do the statistics they will probably find that that loss of market share is in reality massive when converted to passenger numbers in  todays terms. Say one million international arrival and departures in 1979 versus say 4-5 million today. Yes a doubling of the number of passengers, but hardly the market share it had those years ago.

As for Joyce, he is an Australian citizen and has lived here for about 15 years. Those of us coming out with the racist abuse should pull our heads in, including the mods. Grow up for f's sake.

Now maybe we can as a nation think about other forms of transport internally.

For those concerned about the airline industry no one complained too much about Air NZ causing the failure of Ansett (they billed all fuel and maintenace to Ansett, thank you very much). Or Sir Peter Abeles and Murdoch using Ansett to ship TNT freight and The Australian newspaper at no cost. Or Abeles and Murdoch being so stupid they purchased whatever aircraft was cheapest, with no thought to fleet maintenance and parts costs. Or Singapore Airlines white anting of QANTAS, through Virgin and Air NZ to try and get into the Australian domestic market, because they are losing market share in their own region. Or Virgin's white anting, I will crawl to my destination before flying Branson. Or Etihad and Emirates, both loss making nationally owned airlines (well actually owned by their "royal families").

Now the QANTAS shares are going to hit the floor (after they get back from trading suspension which will have to occur ASP), the TWU, AALAE's and the pilits can buy the airline and try and make a profit - not that that will ever happen.

Finally the Engineers unions demand for job security, QANTAS is not the Public Service, other than Public Servants and the ADF no one has that sought of employment security. And neither the ADF nor various Public Services should either.

Cheers,

Hendo

A friend of mine wrote this about Alan Joyce:

"Actually, he's a very smart man. Went to the AGM on Friday and got a 5Mil payrise with some extra penalty clauses thrown in for good measure if the board terminates him early. Next day grounds the airline knowing that if there was a revolt against him, he would leave the airline and be walking out the door with enough money to retire on. If the action succeeds, he makes Qantas more profitable and reaches his performance targets and gets paid a lot more. I can't see how he can lose personally."

My response:

"Gunshot wound to the head."  Twisted Evil
