There WAS a FMC set running on the shore the other day (likely it was originally a standby train at FMC or Olympic Park, or it was a FMC -> HMC transfer without being re-targeted). That's about all I can confirm though, I don't check car numbers, sorry!

One set was S76 or 8. Saw it yesterday running a ECRL service.

C3857(the last painted car), is now at the depot in the sky. A big miss in preservation, just like the single deck car C3101(first steel bodied car).

I'm still waiting for an explanation why "last car to be built with paint on it" is a valid reason for preservation?!?

r_rogel Junior Train Controller

I mean it was the last painted car into service(PTC Livery) before the stainless steel cars(C3858 onwards).

But then, under that thought, cars C3741, T4071 and T4987 should've been preserved because; C3741 and T4071 were the first of the last batch of S set motor and Driving trailer cars (3741-3765 and 4071-4095 were the last order of suburban trains from ComEng between 1979-1980) and T4987 was the last trailer car introduced in 1977.
But all 3 cars were scrapped. 3806 was also looked at as one of the first S set cars in service. And look what happened? It too was scrapped.

My point is, if we should preserve "significant" car, then what is the reason? "Last painted car" and "first un-painted car" are quite invalid. Cars such as C3805 are the ones we should look at, being the oldest in service so far. C3104 was and still is a great candidate for preservation, because it was the oldest running car in service, from 1926-1992, far more than C3101 did. And we have to remember, C3101 wasn't in a good state anyway at the time of withdrawal. Just because something is 'the first', doesn't mean it should be preserved. Obviously C3805 is getting a lot of treatment to keep it alive, aswell as T4066-T4164-C3828. So, we could (and I use that term loosely) see the whole set of S146 set for a good future. But, we don't know that either. C3805 could go into a massive failure and completely stop working and would have it withdrawn from service (I believe it was so close to withdrawal last year).

Only time could tell which cars live on, and which cars will leave their legacy behind ....

Whilst working on the platforms at Olympic Park for the Storm v Rabbitos game I noticed the Electronic Asset Tag missing off quite a number of S set cars. In some cases they were missing off a complete 4 car set and in other cases they were missing off individual cars. The cars with the missing tags seemed fairfly rough and I was wondering if they had gone off register in readiness for the trek to the scrap yard? There may be another explanation but the scrapping one seems logical. Did not have time to record set numbers so the theory could be proved/dis-proved by noting if these cars are scrapped in the near future.

Question = What is an Electronic Asset Tag?

Once I know what that is, I'll probably be able to help you. But I believe what your trying to say is that these S set cars have been transfered from there storage place to where there being scrapped. Since their storage place is Enfield, and their scrapping place is Chullora ... I can only assume they were being transferred from a stabling yard to FMC to be transferred to Enfield.

If that's not the answer, than please explain further as I don't understand your post fully.

You would not be able to assist as you do not even know anything about thetag or its purpose so stay out of things you know nothing about.

The tag is a grey plastic rectangle mounted low down on the car sides near the ends it is a Electronic devise that tells trackside readers what car it is basicly a id tag for each car for internal use.

Thank you Black Hoppers for what an Electronic Asset Tag is.

I said, I might be able to assist if I have the correct concept in my head. However, Ill refrain and let someone with more knowledge help nswtrains.
I wasn't implying that I'm a knowitall kiddie gunzel like I used to be.

So it's an electronic display of a car number underneath; E.g. displaying 'T4980' underneath car T4980, so forth?
