Butler Extension Progress

    For those interested. PTA's own MA1862 is running rail trains up to Nowergup. I caught it last night whilst on night works in the city.

    -UB1 runs through from Flashbutt to Nowergup after last train, with -UB2 returning around 4am. Was impressed with the run through the points from the Freo to the Joondalup line, even in the dark.

    Assumably the MA wont be suited for the actual works trains when they start. Anyone know if QRN or the entity formally know as SSRS/Coote/Silverton/LVRF/IRA/QUBE//// will be supplying motive power for the construction??

    Where is the rail being laid? Obviously not from the Clarkson end as there is still a big stack of sleepers there untouched. I assume they will come into Clarkson from the north, slew into the existing track then remove the points that currently begin the single line.

    Sleepers pile up

    Most of the rail corridor earthworks are complete. A steady stream of the 28,000 concrete sleepers has been stockpiled, ready for installation scheduled for mid-September. Laying of the sleepers, ballast and rail will begin north of Clarkson Station and continue northward under Hester Avenue.

    (Most likely will be slewed/connected later in the project.)

    Just a question, with tracklaying just around the corner is this project still taking all the way out to December 2014 to open? Has Barnett picked a highly conservative opening date so that the Libs don't look foolish after blasting Labor for delays to the Mandurah Line?

    A set of points has appeared north of the platform, alongside the western track. It looks as if this may be installed into the existing track as a temporary access to start tracklaying from the Clarkson end.

    Brief glimpse over the Hester avenue bridge at Nowergup today. Sleepers laid out in stacks and what looks like a single length of welded rail alongside. Site offices and fencing installed at Butler station site

    I wonder if the right of way have been prepared for this extension? And could anyone give me the map of the planned track alignment?

    If you check out nearmap.com you can see the alignment clearly by the earthworks going on.

    it looks as though the PTA are or were looking for contractors to test for noise & vibrations on the northern suburbs railway Butler to Yanchep.

    LOL hahahaha why is there an Adelaide train on the homepage that's actually false advertising and i quote on quote "The Joondalup line currently ends at Clarkson, and government plans exist to extend the Alkimos Beach station from 2014." (it really helps to use the correct wording) "extend the alkimos beach station by 2014", this could mean making platforms longer or anything.

    Just to bring this up - went past the site yesterday, and the down line over the hill north of Hester Avenue has been laid and ballasted, but nothing to the south of Hester Ave that I could see yet - just the rail laid out next to sleeper stacks. The track started about 200m north of Hester Ave and went up and over the crest of the formation, but stopped prior to rounding the bend towards Landbeach Boulevard. Couldn't really see the up line, but will check next time I go past.

    IIRC, the bridge at Hester Ave was a single track "pipe" type (like Abernethy Rd, High Wycombe). What has been done @ Hester Ave for double tracking?

    The down line now extends to the north side of the Benenden Avenue bridge, with ballast being done up until the Landbeach Boulevard bridge. Track gang was working on the rail head north of Benenden Avenue. The MA was underneath the Hester Ave bridge this morning on the north end of a rail train (only three or four wagons) on the down line, and a set of points (future yard access from the down line i imagine) is installed already just north of the bridge. It seems to be fully ballasted from Clarkson station right through to Landbeach Boulevard now, but the up line around the east side of the yard is still piles of sleepers and stacks of rail at the moment.
