The whereabouts of the AN class locos

Thought I decided to make a thread about the current whereabouts of the AN class locomotives, given it's being discussed in the BL's in 2012 thread.

In my time of trainspotting, I don't think I've seen any AN's lead PN freights, despite the fact they are slightly more powerful than the NR's. I've seen a few AN's 'play second fiddle' behind NR's, bit of a waste in my opinion.

I am sure it would come down to crew comfort and ride quality over a little more power up front.
I could be wrong, having only ever been in an N class and a G class while operational, (unless you count the railway museumstourist railways.)

Pretty much. Power's power whether it's on the lead or trailing.

You'll find most of the ANs have gone over to bulk. As Pressman said, there's one in Alice and there's still one or two working intermodal between Melb and Adelaide.

Don't want to sound like someone having a tantrum, but if only National Rail didn't order 120 NR's, that has basicially made life for us enthusiasts boring.

Given this has been fully answered in the BL thread, I fail to see why you would need to make a separate thread to ask the same question again.

Ah there might be 120 NR class locos but the fun/challange is get a photo of  every member of the class
including the various colour schemes over the years how many have done that.thats half the fun of the hobby.so having a large locomotive fleet consisting of one class can be interesting. Smile

cheers rob.

The rubbish train seems to have AN's leading every now and then, Ive seen a few photos of AN's on it but having not seen it myself, I cant comment if it is common or not.

Stephen88 caught this on Saturday- AN9 leading an 81 at Mascot

If they didn't order 120 NR's they would have ordered 120 locos of another brand and called they NR's and some people would smeg about them being boring!

*wonders why seb2351's post was reported*

Unless my eyes are deceiving me there's either a PN livery AN or DL sitting behind an NR at ACR atm.

Nice photos. On Friday I'll be doing train filming at Mt Lofty station, be great to spot an AN, even if it's trailing.

Bingo! They needed 120 powerful locos off a specific manufacturer to do a job, and that's what they got.

Last night I sent Great Southern Rail an email regarding the locomotives used on the three trains (Ghan, IP & Overland), & if other types of locos should be used.  If anyone wants to see the reply I got today, feel free to PM me.

Not sure which one it is, but an AN went north on 7WB3 the other night, possibly with NR61? I can't recall Sad

My first thought was that it was an ANcl but I could only see its back end off in the distance so no idea on number either.

PN Intermodal is rumored to be buying more C44ACis , beyond the next three , and if thats the case you probably won't see too many things that aren't these or NRs on Intermodal/Express/Steel trains unless short term stop gaps or transfers .
On paper an NR cranks out about 4020 hp and ANs have about 3840 into the power glide alternator .
Bulk Div needs motive power too and like everyone else they'll see the advantages 4000+ Hp units have over 3000 Hp ones .
If anything its a pity ANR didn't order more AN class units .

NRC killed any chance of further AN's being ordered by the then AN, the Hawke/Keating government defeated by Howard about the same time as AN's delivered, AN lost any autonomy at this time.

The point I make is that more ANs would have been usefull for AN NRC and PN . They would not have gone to waste .

From what I know there are only 3 AN Class locomotives left in the PN Intermodal business and all the rest are over in the Bulk business.I hope that helps knowing they are all being used.

Not only did the evil National Rail kill off any chance of more AN's being built, but they killed off any hopes of steam trains/tours from Adelaide to Victor Harbor with that 'one national project to standardize the Adelaide-Melbourne line in 1995. Until then the Adelaide Hills were well & truly alive with BL's, 700's, 830's, C's, G's, S's & X class locos.

NR simply were an enthusiast's worst nightmare.
