Looks like I will be only touching on during Early Bird hours and after 6. Until both Early Birds and the 6PM-3AM "2 hour" period are scrapped - I can almost guarantee that is on their todo list.
Which will no doubt catch a lot of the Great Unwary out and cause the Authorised Officers to rub their hands in glee.It shouldn't make any difference to AOs, who would still see a touched-on card. The difference is that the user would be charged an all day fare, instead of a two hour one.
That "free time" of up to 59 minutes has existed for very many years and is another arguably sly cut in the benefits offered to users in the name of making Myki more efficient.
With regards to the changes to mickey, the East-West tunnel is going to soak up all the spare money the state government has so they're going to make P/T more expensive - along with every other service. They need to do this to obsessively keep the AAA credit rating - to counter the problem of the E/W soaking up 9 or so billion.
I'd imagine that they have some more realistic financial advice about the prospect of private money backing up E/W and they've probably found out that nobody wants to touch it with a barge-pole. A lot of merchant banks have been burnt with these ambitious PPP's lately and they've lost their appetite for them.
Removing the extra 59 minutes from a touch-on is a fare increase by stealth (in addition to the actual fare increases we've had anyway). They're not sympathetic to the losers who use public transport and they want to discourage them - that's less potential toll/fine targets out there on the roads for God's sake!
