It's a local property developer trying to drum up business. How it got into the paper is the reason why people have stopped reading them lately.

How would a rail service help?  Yep, I'mma move to a town with massive unemployment coz it haz trainz!
  Carnot Minister for Railways

Look at the article in more detail:

"We hear stories where people want to maybe move out of Werribee, Melton or Sunbury because they have grown too quickly and infrastructure hasn't kept up."
I'd want to move out of those places too, but not just for the reasons listed here....

"He said he had seen a lot of older, widowed women take this path but that the homes were also attractive to younger, local families."
And that demographic use PT a lot.  i.e. Pensioners and teenagers who don't/cannot drive and the fact that PT is cheaper than driving if you're on a concession.

The fact of the matter is that trains, more than buses, do attract people to a location.  More (train) services to Maryborough and Echuca each day would have a measurable effect on the local economy IMO.

I don't think it really matters, but Clarkefield is the railway station for both Romsey and Lancefield. True, at the moment it only has a pub, shop and a (growing) school, but in a decade or two it will probably become a major suburb. So we should bear that in mind when when considering it's future.

Apparently the macedon ranges council wont let anywhere in their area get made into suburbs Rolling Eyes

Yes that's correct, but that's because the people don't want to be considered part of the metro area.

They don't have any choice. There are very significant bushfire overlays within the Macedon Ranges Shire precluding development.

Maryborough is expecting a mini property boom. Additional rail passenger services could assist greatly.
Bethungra

I'd treat any claims of 'mini real-estate boom' with scepticism. I know for a fact that property in general in and around Ballarat is moving very slowly - the problem is jobs.  Maryborough has one of the highest unemployment rates in Victoria, that's hardly likely to be a preclude to a property boom.

What makes  the likes of Echuca,  Maryborough, and Geelong - Ballarat towns is that with a decent shuttle rail service into Bendigo, Ballarat, Geelong these townships become attractive places to live and commute to from work/study  in the major regional centres of Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo .

So at say Lethbridge or Meredith your home costs you less and you have a great lifestyle whilst being linked by rail to Geelong or Ballarat by shuttle rail services with connections to Melbourne as well .

Do you actually know where Macedon Ranges is?  Or what the urban growth boundary is?

Does your cluelessness know no bounds?

It depends on the locality. It's roughly about 40 to 90km from the city.

So?  It's 40km from the suburban limits at Sydenham.

Again, do you know what the urban growth boundary is?

ZH, I recall a proposal being touted roughly ten years ago to include Gisborne in the metro area. There was an event that was held in protest.

If they keep extending the Metro system out and out and out, eventually, they will have to run a Brisbane style service. For example, like the Gold Coast line, run sparks with express services, proper express services.

A meaningless statement.

The Macedon Ranges is a large geographical area incorporating several towns, a national park and, as mentioned, a large bushfire overlay.

Okay sorry, I assumed the protesting was because the locals would be moved from a fancy v/line train to an electric stopper.

I was in Ballarat the other day and I was astonished to see the huge new McMansion estates at Delacombe and Alfredton - they seem to mushroom overnight.  Apparently there's a huge amount of people catching the train to Melbourne every day for work... personally I wouldn't want to take a train that kind of distance every day.
  kuldalai Chief Commissioner

Travelling by VLP train from Ballarat, Geelong, Gisborne, Kilmore East or even Castlemaine is faster than travelling by snails pace Metro trains from Croydon or Frankston . The RFR project has well exceeded its patronage estimates and benefits of developing nearer country centres .

Geelong has 20 minute Off Peak tt from 04/15, what is needed now is  30 minute Off Peak tt to both Ballarat and Bendigo, the current patronage would support it .

Here is a link to what the ABS defines as Melbourne for the purposes of calculating population and demographics.  Note that it was extended for the 2011 census and now includes Macedon, Romsey and Lancefield - but not Woodend or Kilmore.

Planning is a complete joke in this state. $250,000 for a postage stamp-sized block of land on the extreme fringes of the metro area is completely stupid - it only encourages the move to ex-urbs like Wallan, Drouin and Bacchus Marsh.

I misunderstood the context of Metro area. I can understand people not wanting suburb after suburb going out and out.

The estates go up so fast, Google maps can't keep up.
