    There are a number of Vegemite clones sold in AU.

    Indeed, Vegemite may be a clone of an earlier British model.

    What are their names?

    Where might they be bought?

    What do they cost?

    Years ago, a business mate of mine in Philadelphia sent a telex ( told you it was a long time ago ! ), asking, "What's a Vegemite sandwich?'  He'd heard the line from Men at Work singing "We come from a land down under ."

    I bought a small jar of Vegemite, and sent it to him, complete with instructions including the need to spread the stuff very thinly!

    He replied a little later, saying that he figured Vegemite was an acquired taste, and that his son Michael took some to school and wasn't expelled, so he thought it was probably legal.

    I actually don't mind promite. My first job we used to get provided Vitabrits, Vintage Bega and Promite for morning tea, mmmm

    Marmite. Was first and was created in late 1890s in UK


    Vegemite came in 1919 in Australia and even had a name change to Parwill for a few years to compete with Marmite
    "Marmite but Parwill " was the slogan

    Promite  is from 1950s and Aussiemite from 2000

    I think you need someone to take you to a supermarket, and show you the spreads section where the jams and peanut butters are.

    The Marmite on sale in Australia is NZ Made and bears little resemblance to the original from the UK. Another one is the Swiss made Cenovis.

    No one has mentioned 'Bovril'? - Which I think on a technicality is older than even Marmite, but was not made from extractions of yeast at the time, on another technicality, it might not be made from such extractions anymore either, but it certainly was, and possibly still is.

    Then there was 'Cenovis', very famous for keeping the Swiss soldiers doing whatever it is that Swiss soldiers do considering they have not lately been tested in a meaningful battle...

    For the record, I think all of them are terrible, I'll get my yeast intake through that fine brew Coopers' Pale thankyou very much. I have no need for a sandwich spread, I'll just have a beer with lunch. - sorted.

    Hmmm, I never trust Wiki, my feeling is it might have had more to do with a certain zoonotic bovine disease prevalent in the UK at the time...

    Marmite from UK is sold here as Our Mate at IGAs, 125g for $5, very different from NZ Marmite which had caramel and sugar added in its transition to the Antipodes in early 20th century. Dare I say Our Mate tastes more like Vegemite.

    * Aussiemite from 2000
    * Ozemite from 2012 (Dick Smith)
    * Cenovis from Switzerland
    * Bovril (may belong to a different category).

    * Mighty-Mite (advert on 2GB 20 June) (Made in Lidcombe, NSW, by an Australian owned company, Three Threes)
    * Vegemite Cheesybite (thanks Graham4405 - see below) (named in a competition)
    * Freedom Vege Spread (thanks Valvegear).
    * Brekkie Mite ; Bramwell's ; Made in Brazil ; Imported by ALDI.

    However not all clones are sold at the one store, so you need to visit several stores to complete the list.

    I'll add MightyMite to the list.  Claimed to be made in Australia by and Australian company to an Australian recipe.  I started using it at least ten years ago because I wanted something with less sodium (ie salt) than Vegemite.  It's quite a lot cheaper (around 1 cent per gram and much less on special) but does not seem to spread quite as far as Vegemite.

    Yep,  MightyMite is made by Three Threes Condiments Pty Ltd of Lidcombe NSW.

    Now known as "Vegemite Cheesybite". It is Vegemite mixed with cream cheese spread. Anyone with half a brain can mix their own to taste.
