Unusual tram sightings - Melbourne

Saw one of those new trams (E-Class) being tested in the city last night. Looked great, bright LEDs. Nicer than Citadis.

Will these finally see the retirement of the Z class & A/B class?
Bobman

To replace all Z,A and B class trams, that wouls require about 350 new trams, so no, that isn't likely to happen any time soon. What is likely to happen though, is the withdrawal of Z1 and Z2 class trams, as well as the W class trams from Glenhuntly (which we have already seen happen). We are also likely to see some of the troublesome Z3 trams withdrawn towards the end of the program. If the govt does give the go ahead for the additional order of 100 E class, than we will likely see the withdrawal of most of the other Z3 class trams.

The A and B class trams are not that close to the end of their lives so we will have them around for the next decade at the very least.

Simple solution for next time you make a double post: delete one. However, you must do this before someone replies.

On a completely different note, I saw E.6001 heading north along Glenferrie Rd, Hawthorn around 10:30am. Was not in service.

^^ I thought A1 231 caught on fire and has been withdrawn? Are you sure its not a Showgrounds shuttle and doing a full service on Route 57?

The tram was 237, and it was a 57a, I caught it from Newmarket to the city today. Just because a tram's PID says something, doesn't always make it true. For example, one I caught Z1.10 on route 5, but the destination said 72 (or vice-versa)
Anyway, 286 is now on 57a

you mean B1.2002? ^

Add to that, the fact that it was a B1, not a B2 is what makes it unusual. If it was a B2, there would have been no point posting it, as they are regular on 57a. BTW, another tram made an unusual appearance on 57a: Z3.127

Is B2.2004 running with a single operational brakelight affixed to the dashboard considered unusual?  I know I certainly think it is, as all other trams I've seen have their brake lights in more standard locations. To me it looked like a field expedient repair as the standard brakelights appeared to be non-functioning.

Z3.187 is running a route 19 service. Second consecutive route 19 Z3 to be on a weekend (last ime it was 147 and occurred on a Saturday)

This is where to post unusual tram sightings. In case you don't know what I mean by an "unusual tram sighting", here are a few things that qualify as unusual

1. A type of tram running on a route it doesn't normally run on (see below for details)
2. Trams testing on an unusual route
3. An unusual amount of a certain tram on a route. Example Route 109 (Box Hill to Port Melbourne) Normally has one or two A2s, so seeing four or more A2s on route 109 is unusual.
4. A tram in a foreign depot (e.g a Z-class at Camberwell depot)

Which routes trams run on
1: Z3, B2
3: Z1/2/3, A1, B2
3a: Z1/2/3, A1, B2
5: Z1/2/3, D1
6: Z1/2/3, D1
8: Z1/2/3, B2, D1
11: A1, B1/2
12: A1/2
16: Z1/2/3, D1
19: B2, D2
30: W, A1/2(occasionally)
35: W
48: A2, C
55: Z3, B2
57: Z3
59: B2
64: Z1/2/3, A1, B2
67: Z1/2/3, A1, B2
70: A2, B2
72: Z1/2/3, D1
75: A2, B2
78: Z1/2/3, A1
82: Z3
86: B1/2
96: C2, D2, E
109: A2, C

Extra services:

That would not have been in service. It was probably driver training. The only time I have ever seen Combinos running route 86 (or in fact, anything other than Bs and the very rare A) was earlier this year, when there were works on the Victoria Pde/Nicholson St corner, meaning 86a between Parliament and Waterfront City was operated by Southbank. During that week, even a few C2s and Es ran 86a. However, due to operational requirements, they terminated at the former route 75 terminus on La Trobe/Spencer Sts). That week, even C.3017 ran 86a (because it was loaned to Southbank. Note: it was able to run to Waterfront City). Other than that, route 86 only runs B1s, B2s and, on rare occasions, an A class - those are the only types of trams East Prestondrivers are trained to drive.

On a completely different note: I caught D2.5003 on route 16, and due to late running, the service diverted via Dandenong Rd

Probably not. They usually run via St Georges Rd. I'd say it was driver training.
