Tony will need how many terms in gov to fix stuff?
Sadly this current gov will still go down in history and remembered by the media as the culprits of economic demise. Talk of putting all gov spending under the microscope should start with politicians pay packets and perks.

The whole point of getting into office is to look after yourself and your mates (apparently). Cutting pay packets and perks would be the complete opposite of that; the whole idea is to look after yourself and make decisions that ruin the lives of others, not you.
Amanda Vanstone is going to be on the Audit Commission making recommendations for cuts; interim report in January and final report in March.  I'm really interested to see what will be cut; they seem to be sending mixed messages at the moment -

don_dunstanPrivate debt is the real worry here as I've said before; private debt remains stubbornly high at about 160% of GDP for the last three years.  Most of this occurred during the Howard/Costello years but they really weren't interested in trying to contain it because it fuelled the housing and construction boom in the capitals; in fairness Rudd/Gillard didn't give a damn about it either so it's bipartisan policy to keep private debt going up.
don_dunstan

But the Government really has no control over private debt apart from pulling a few levers where interest rates are concerned; but they are suppose to be independently set by the Reserve Bank. sic cough.

Hang on..............they have only been in for a matter of weeks.  And may I ask what economic miracles you think the previous Government bestowed on its citizens?......does the Carbon Tax debacle ring any bells?  The boat people debacle is costing the country a small fortune which we will be all paying for - for years to come.

If the previous bunch of idiots had of been half competent this current Government would not have to walk around with a poo scooper cleaning up nuggets all over the place.

don_dunstanAbbott and Hockey aren't stupid, they can see that any serious cutting is going to upset the apple-cart so it's going to be spend, spend, spend!  At least until some serious problems emerge.  I was really worried myself about the extent of the cutting they would do in office but obviously I was completely wrong about that... as were a lot of other people.

One word: REGULATION.

Our private banks were unable to borrow money overseas up until the last term of Malcolm Fraser when he decided it would be in our interests to change policy; prior to that our capacity to borrow overseas was restricted by the government.  Hawke pushed it up a few notches when they completely deregulated such things, allowing the Big Four Banks to do pretty much whatever they wanted - private overseas borrowing expanded by 20 percent a year for quite some time during the 1980's but it started to go into the stratosphere under Howard/Costello. Therein lies the seeds of our current, historically unprecedented housing boom and our trillion dollar foreign debt.

If Tony wanted to stop the debt (there's a slogan!) he could do it with a snap of his fingers.  Did you seriously not realise that? They're in government, telling the banks what they can and can't do is well within their power, banks are after all only operating under license from the government.  Whether or not the banks would let them do it would be another issue.

The first thing that I would like to see done is for the ABC to be privatised! That mob needed the broom put through them years ago.

Rupert Murdoch has been arguing for that for a long time, he'll be really happy he's got another friend in you.  However I think there will be lots of people in the Abbott government frightened of going that far - even they can see the value of maintaining a government broadcaster independent of Murdoch.  The fact that Rupert hates the ABC with a passion should be your clue.

I actually thought you really were banned, and didn't bother replying. Now I see you may not be and just wear the 'banned' tag as a badge of honour.

01/07 might be a way off, but in case you missed it, that is the day when just about all changes to our various taxation acts take effect.

Im no banned socialist! Using Tony as my avatar can be interpreted anyway you want. The lib lovers will like it. The labor lovers can laugh at it because its not exactly a great photo. A little off topic but Im a big fan of Obama. He was handed smeg on a plate and needed a 2nd term to get things in order. I think Tony will need the same. Ultimately this country needs less fingers in the pie. That has been achieved now with Tony running the show. I see no point about arguing about the past. Lets get on with it and make this nation great again. For the record I did a donkey vote last election. Nobody was worth my vote. Yes i understand that if everyone did what I did the country would be stuffed.

It's difficult not to argue about the past, particularly when team Tony, consistently blames the previous mob.

The "National emergency" re; the budget and "Illegal maritime arrivals". Being prime examples.

When and if this behaviour, ceases, and the government assumes responsibility, then, indeed, it will be time to move on.

But you people are forgetting that the Government HAVE to increase the debt limit because if they don't we will be in the same boat as the USA, where the Government cannot pay it's bills and run the country.

Just because your friend Joe Hockey says this nonsense in the media doesn't necessarily mean it's true...

We still have our 'triple A' credit rating despite Joe Hockey telling us the economy is stuffed. Now he's banging on about the urgent repeal of the Mining tax.

If in Joe Hockeys words the Mining tax was a failure because it only raised $100 million...why then the urgency to repeal it Question

Fortunately the Abbott administration doesn't have the stomach to even contemplate privatising the ABC because they know the backlash would see them out of office. Moreover, they would need a majority in the Senate...guess what....no majority... Wink

Actually 2301 is actually that mad South African guy who writes for the Daily Tele who won't reveal who actually pays him for his syndicated fascist rants. Oh dear, there are a couple of them, Bolt and Piers. But I believe Piers is employed by the Dirty Digger so it must be Bolt. The would not have the professionalism to be employed by the ABC, that is why they hate it so much.

I think it's much more selfish than that - they've seen what Murdoch has done to governments that he doesn't like and they have a genuine fear that at some stage in the future he might turn on them like he did to Rudd.  But you are also right about the electorate going crazy about it - I don't watch a lot of ABC myself but I have intellectual friends who watch nothing else.  They would go ballistic and start picketing if anything happened to it.

Barrie Cassidy has written an interesting opinion piece today about the very tight media control of the new Abbott government and the reluctance to answer questions.  As he notes it's very interesting to compare this new strategy with that of the Rudd government who, let's face it, were all over the place and tried to release something every day in the 24 hour media cycle in the vein of Mike Rann and Bob Carr.

I wonder (like Barrie does) if it will work in the longer term given the media need something to go on - there's a danger that the opposition will fill the vacuum left behind; and after all, Abbott has shown them now the best way of doing it while he was in opposition - attack the government every single day and in every single way.  Rinse.  Repeat.

The problem I'm seeing is the Liberals need another term just to finish writing their own policies properly. Most of their ideas could fit on a double sided sheet of paper, there is a serious lack of detail on how to implement, or how much it will actually cost.

Case in point their NBN plan, which aside from being faster, cheaper ($19.5 billion), sooner, and involving buying a whole lot of stuff from Huawei, has no real usable details. Lumping NBNco with the problem of how to build it in that short timescale, within that budget, it just asking for a repeat of the previous plan (only resetting all the lessons learned constructing FTTH). I fully expect it to fail massively, go over both time and budget, the poor state of Telstra copper has made it a forgone conclusion.

To call this a show implies it is some sort of entertainment theatre (a circus perhaps ?), but having had two circuses nearby I see there is no comparison. The federal Liberal party is neither entertaining nor a collection of highly trained professionals. Given the choice to watch parliament for free, or pay the get into the circus, I highly recommend the option that costs $35 or so.

After months of swearing blind that's exactly what I would do on polling day for just that reason, I found I was only half able to follow through. I did donkey the senate (if ever there was a portion of govt with a seemingly infinite %age of useless snouts at the trough! Rolling Eyes ) , but ultimately did vote properly for the reps (not saying for whom).
