Shock news!- Prmeier Barry O Farrell has fallen on his sword and resigned

    Premier Barry O Farrell has announced his resignation, after a thank you note was apparently found thanking someone for the $3000 bottle of wine, New Premier to be elected next week, Stay Tuned, more to come.....

    I don't agree with a lot of his policies, but Barry came across as an OK man.

    Those who are old enough might recall this is the second NSW Liberal premier to fall victim to ICAC.

    I agree with others here that Barry didn't appear to be a bad guy - it's going to throw the NSW Liberals into complete chaos.  My immediate reaction was "You silly bloke!".  If he had told the truth about the bottle of Grange he probably wouldn't have been in as much trouble... oh well.

    There will be other resignations to follow - this is just the tip of the iceberg.

    There is always the "devil you know" aspect to things as well, the only sure thing about the incoming premier is that they won't have been scrutinised by the media and the public as potential premier.

    On a slightly extremely irrelevant and irreverent note, I only just noticed how much he looks like Will Ferrell as well as having a similar name.

    Hmmm, Liberal politician resigns over $3,000 bottle of wine...Labour politician sees out his terms and fights ICAC and charges in court over $100 Million coal and water scandal, oh and the another Labour politician/Union boss sees out his term and stands up and lies to parliament and fights criminal charges over abuse of union members funds, and all the others we know about or are yet to know about... and yet people keep voting for Labour!?!?!?!?

    I would rather vote for the greedy mob than the greedy. incompetent, stealing, lying, back-stabbing, factional and dysfunctional mob.

    A most blatant conflict of interest, with Abbott expressing full confidence. It's not an isolated incident either. In other words, both sides have done and still do it. I'm not a supporter of either, but if O'Farrell misled, so did Nash.  It's easier when you look at politics without being one-eyed.

    What Barry should have said yesterday (and still been skating within the 'truth') was that he had no idea the Grange was worth as much as it was (say, fifty bucks) and therefore didn't need to be declared. I think it would be a forgiveable sin that he doesn't know the value of every single piece of gratuity they get while in office, especially the minor ones like a bottle of wine here or there.

    The note was really poor form though, you should never put things like that in writing if you might have cause to hide it in the future - and an inappropriately expensive personal gift anyway, he should have thought twice about accepting it. Oh well, it's a rough game this politics thing.

    Being forced to resign certainly didn't have any adverse affect on Nick Greiner's career after politics and I'm sure that it will be the same thing for Barry. Look at Sophie Mirabella, nice cushy job after being kicked out of her own electorate in the middle of a Liberal landslide... if you're too incompetent for the private sector they'll always find you a ministerial appointment somewhere.

    They all look after their own.

    It originally was the Australian Labour Party but was changed, supposedly for "modernization" in the presence of an American... BS if you ask me, but that's the story.

    The spelling is irrelevant now, because ALP now stands for "Another Liberal Party" or the "Anti Labour Party"... forget about "labor".

    Two words in particular worry be about Politics these days.

    Lobbyist and Outsourcing.

    Try and do business with any Government without a Lobbyist in the middle and see how far you get.

    Some of us can still remember the days before Outsourcing when Governments employed people to work for them, rather that pay an outside Company to do the work for them. There used to be a time that Sydney Water did all its own infrastructure work, but now much is Outsourced, and in that murky mess a bottle of plonk has changed hands.

    It does seem rather extreme that a Premier has to resign over a misplaced bottle of plonk. No doubt more will be revealed in time and the Liberals may reveal their entanglements in Obeidgate and so on.

    There was discussion on the ABC tonight about what else might be uncovered as ICAC goes on.

    The more I think find out about this, the less sorry I feel for Barry O'Farrell. Nick Di Griolamo was representing a speculative business interest whose very profitability and success depended on intimate relationships with state government ministers. The newly-elected premier had just given a speech about how there were no more secrets and back-room deals under his leadership and yet privately at the same time he accepts a really inappropriately-expensive gift from someone like Di Griolamo, someone trying to win government contracts.

    Alarm bells should have been ringing for O'Farrell the instant he got that gift. What if Australian Water Holdings gets caught trying to bribe someone further down the track, what might this look like?

    And it also makes you wonder if he forgets something as significant as hand-writing a thank-you note to a big-wig Liberal Party figure what other things have been forgotten about...

    Somehow it pales into insignificance when placed alongside that prick Thompson and his spending union funds on prostitutes. At least O'Farrell did the honourable thing, Thompson is still standing up barefaced claiming his innocence.
