Why do they tell you where an empty train is going?

I've heard thid a few times before, how come when there is a train terminating at Flinders Street, the announcement I just heard is:
"Train on platform 10 not taking passengers, all change please, empty cars to Melbourne Yard, all change please"
Is this required for the drivers or staff or something? Or is there no real reason?

It's used to let staff and drivers know which way the train is expected to leave Flinders St. During the peaks there are quite a few empty car movements timetabled to leave at the same time, most times from different platforms. But with late running or fleet requirements, any train can leave from any platform, so it makes it easier for staff to be where they should be.

It basically re-iterates the fact that if you don't listen and stay on board your going for a tour of the yard, Drivers
know what platform they are taking empties from, and if there are changes they are told promptly by phone from the train allocation officer.

Is it any worse than the announcements that are made about a train's destination and stopping pattern once the train has started moving?
Happens all the time at Southern Cross, Richmond, Box Hill and a few other places.

And how often do you hear of the urban legends where people have claimed to have dozed off on a train, over shot their destination, and ended up waking up on a train that has stabled in a siding in total darkness ConfusedRolling Eyes

It helps us drivers know if it's our train, empty cars are often running late or even turning up early.
