What's going on with the Stony Point Line?

The network hasn't been able to handle the patronage since the 1920s, nothing new there. As for an hourly service after 8PM, how would that work if the Frankston trains are every 20 minutes? Better off with 30 or 40 minutes at worst to be in line with other outer suburban lines (Lilydale/Belgrave/Hurstbridge/Sunbury to name a few). An hourly service is not worth even running one, just look at the state of our buses where that happens on a 7 day basis (or even 5 days, because a number of them don't even have provision for Saturday or Sunday).

An hourly service to Stony Point after 8PM would be a massive improvement compared to what they have now.

The current timetable (Mon - Thurs) has the last train to Stony Point leaving Frankston at 6:35PM, and the last train from Stony Point departing for Frankston at 7:26PM

That said, my knowledge of the needs of the local area are minimal, and for all I know there would be nobody actually desiring to use such a service.

Today's Stony Point line is reminiscent of the Eltham-Hurstbridge section in the 1970s, where a single Tait motor ran the rounds much like the Stony Point Sprinter; it's nothing more than a glorified bus service on rails right now complete with the abysmal bus-like timetable that we are so well known for in Victoria. Put up the wires, extend the platfoms and throw an X'Trap down there on "opening day" and people will flock to the stations like sheep. Of course, that will only happen if they don't have to wait an hour for a train and if they can get back after 7:30 in the evening (I refuse to call anything before 10PM "night"). As a bonus, it will free up carpark spaces at Frankston because everyone won't have to drive there to catch a more frequent train.

How about this as a cheap and viable option for extended services.

Electrify single line Frankston to Baxter.

Maintain 10 minute frequency Melbourne to Frankston and extend every 3rd spark to Baxter giving a 30 minute frequency.  With 9 minute running time the spark can easily get down and back well before next spark runs south of end of double track at Franger.

Run a Baxter to Stony Point shuttle (2xSprinter) connecting with every 2nd Baxter spark - giving a regular hourly service south of Baxter.  25/27 minute running time Baxter to Stony Point means one train set can maintain hourly frequency without need for any crossing facilities.

I went for a ride there on Saturday and noticed that they had automatic announcements for each forthcoming station.
Does anyone have an idea when they started doing this?
The last time I traveled there was in March 2014 and they didn't have announcements then.

The single-car Tait from Eltham only ran on weekends and holidays, as I recall.  During the week, including at night, trains ran right through to Hurstbridge, if on a dismal frequency.  The difference is wires to the end of the line.

The Stony Point operation is actually more like the old Lilydale-Healesville one, with a similar timetable, and we know what happened to that (and with good reason).

B80 is over 60 years old, it's usefull as a works and infrastrucutre loco, running the odd ballast/ spoil trains, but its days running regular passenger services are well and truley over.

Old rolling stock never stopped the VR in it's day.

They'd be still running taits if they didn't have asbestos brakes.

On both Lilydale and Frankston, the VR ran Taits with G cars (G for gas lighting) and connected a loco (an E class steam I think) to them and ran them to Stony Point or Healesville/Warby.

The new Harris trains had Stony Point and Healesville/Warburton in their destination scrolls but I'm not sure if a Harris was ever towed to these locations.

I recall the single car Tait ran to Hurstbridge on Sundays. Also one ran to Alamein and Williamstown (Pier?) There were four single car Taits

Which they didn't until relatively late in their careers. Taits (and everything else that I can think of) had cast iron brake blocks.

Rumor has it that sprinters canned on Stony Point due to booms coming up on approach to a level crossing.
Metro getting axle counters as quick as possible but that will take 6 months.
So Metro are looking at Metro T class+ heritage car + V/line P class for HEP to substitute until job complete.

No Vlocities available, MTH cars would need refurbing. Remember, they're looking for a stop-gap solution, not a permanent one.

You'd need a P or A class for head-end power. Or a power van to go along with the two Ts.

It's all nonsense anyway, Metro should know by now that bustituting that service is cheaper than running anything past a Sprinter in size.

Unlike the regular H cars, AFAIK the three remaining MTH cars don't have self-closing doors (probably an OH&S issue these days), haven't been repainted in over a decade and are still in the old red livery, and probably haven't been refurbished internally since the early 1980s. With a coat of white paint and some blue PTV stickers (using "Metro" blue instead of V/Line purple for the Stony Point line), they will look a lot better.

As for the "Metro" B or T class locos, I can't see why they couldn't be used, seeing that the MTH cars all have their own HEP equipment, unlike regular H cars - it's why the Stony Point line was predominantly run by A classes without the need for a power van.

I wouldnt say the self closing doors are an OH&S issue, moreso stopping the morons climbing on roof issue LOL!

As for Stony Point, I honestly think a loco hauled train will cause less issues than the Sprinters.  I bet the Stony Point customers are looking forward to the trains coming back!!

What's happening?

Currently and for some time now the entire passenger service has been replaced by buses departing terminal stations more or less at advertised train times but taking 20 - 30 minutes longer than the train (due to varying degrees of traffic congestion) and missing advertised City train connections at Frankston and at Stony Point with the ferries.

Long Island steel trains continue to run at their normal times with the occasional early or late trip according to requirements.

The sprinters were failing to reliably activate level crossing predictors and axle counters at Tyabb and possibly other locations which is said to be due to their disc brakes and light weight not creating a clean enough wheel-rail interface for this equipment to work with 100% reliability.

That problem does not affect the heavy and rim-braked steel trains.

Local people are abandoning the bus option in droves and making other arrangements.  Where trains were often one or two well-filled sprinters some recent bus trips have carried single digit passenger numbers.

There is no advertised time to resolve this issue as parts area apparently coming from overseas with no certainty of delivery, installation and clearance for safe operation times.  It has been suggested the trains might be back during June though this is not a definite statement from any official source.

There is nothing to be gained from constructing theoretical timetables for through services to and from the City as such workings are not required and even if the route were electrified there is no need to have six-car trains running all the way to Stony Point.

What is needed is the political motivation to enhance all public transport to the Westernport region and that should include electrification t oStony Point, a third platform at Frankston capable of holding a 3-car EMU, ideally double track to Hastings but as a minimum a crossing loop at Tyabb.  Double track to Hastings would permit an hourly basic service with half-hourly peak-time trains.  If another loop were installed at Crib Point then a 20-minute service could operate.  That is more than likely traffic demands would justify now but may be required in the future.  Alternatively a 20-minute service could run on the double track to Hastings with one an hour going through to Stony Point on single track.

Wholesale improvements to bus connections should become a part of that package in order to link the very fast-growing new suburbs south of Cranbourne which will within a couple of years see continuous urban sprawl join Hastings to Berwick!

Two sprinters ran down empty cars to Frankston yesterday and stabled overnight.

Today they have been running test trips out of service.

It's been a long time since I was disturbed by the shrill whistle of a sprinter!

Normal services have returned to the Stony Point line as of this morning. As far as I can tell from the Metro website, the previously bused single carriage Sprinter runs have been reinstated as well.

Finally single car sprinters are allowed to run again (I did see a photo from today of one somewhere). How long has it been since these were banned?
