Recorded Platform Announcements

Hi guys,

Hope you can assist.  I'm looking for any recorded station platform announcements. (any format, preferably .WAV)

I've worked out JMRI SoundPro and using a Logix to trigger sounds, and want to trigger passenger platform announcements.  I've got it working, but just need some actual announcements now. Smile Also got it working from JMRI WiThrottle to trigger manually from my Android tablet. Smile Doesn't really matter what the announcement are.

You know, "DING DING DING DONG..........  The next train to arrive on platform four goes to ..... blah blah blah" or "DING DING DING DONG........ Stand clear on platform 2.  Train now departing".

I could record them myself using my own voice, and tried that, but BLYAAAARK!!  Just doesn't sound right... with the ambience/echo/style of real ones.

Any suggestions?   Any other section on Railpage perhaps I should ask as well?

Taa muchly in advance for any help.

Alan. (Garahbara)

Hey there Garahbara.

There is a guy on the NSW forums that has a DVA software and if you can (without the copyright stuff) strip the .wav files off DVA.

Taa.  Thanks for that.  Found that and downloaded earlier this evening.  Then had to watch the Swannies on tele.  Will spend an hour or two on it before nodding off and see what it does. Smile

Brilliant, brilliant and even more brillianter than brilliant. Smile That will give me enough to play with for ..... well.....  ever. Smile You can "export" your tailored announcement as a .WAV, which I can then load into JMRI SoundPro.  I'm sure there's something in JMRI SoundPro (or something) that will add a bit of reverb/echo to it to get that more authentic sound to it.  There are 3 files. the .exe (which install it) and two others.  a .bz2 and a .gz  Not sure what they're for yet, but appear to be some sort of .zip files.  Need to find something that will open them.  Will check that one out tomorrow. I'm sure I'll find a use for the "Indicators" section in it as well.

I"ll try and put up a video of it all pieced together soon.  Including LocSound DCC loco, with the JMRI SoundPro announcements.  All run from Androind tablet.  Watch my blog for it soon. Smile  http://garahbara.blogspot.com/

Thanks again for your help. Smile

Hmm, I could actually understand what the bloke was saying Gara.  A bit more work needed there.

For the era I prefer to model no real need.  Sydney Central was about the only place that had announcements and they were absolutely unintelligible.   That's in New South.  Maybe Spencer Street and Flinders Street had better systems and better announcers.

In thems proper days, John, they used a real person with a microphone.  Usually of Italian or Greek decent, and completely unintelligible. Dearly love to get hold of some of these 50s and 60s Flinders St station platform announcements.  "Dundar nee nonga tahran now a dapartering ona da plutfum seeks stupping alla da staysherns to a dunder nee nong. Stund clar plus" Smile  All said at a hundred miles an hour!

Funny, their cousins were in Sydney on the end of a mike.  Must have been a recruiting directive, give the {resist derogatory names} a go.

That bloke used to work at Box Hill Very Happy. He gave me a clip over the ears because I used to use my home made square key to open the gates and let the passengers off the platform while he was flagging the train off.

Just about anything can open bz2 and gz files (or, .tar.gz, as they are usually paired together, as tar files have no compression at all) - they are the standard archive format for Linux. Your best bet would probably be 7-zip under Windows (I have no idea about Mac software; the last and only Mac I ever used was made in 1991).

Worked them out.  Ordinary old Winzip ( on windows) opens them.  My Winzip was not configed to use that file extension (.bz2 & .gz). What's in them is a .dmg file (Disc "mountable image") for Macs I understand.  For Windows, you just need the .exe.

Progress has been made on setting up some platform announcements.  I've put a bit of a "how to" and results on my Garahbara blog Click here.

Any comments, feedback or want to know more, much appreciated.

Thanks guys.

Alan.
