Too much traffic in some threads? Bots or glitches contributing to Railpage outages?
Over here in WA there are not many people making comments on Railpage. For the last couple of years it seems to have got down to less than a dozen. Has everyone gone to facebook or somewhere? (I deleted facebook back in 2005) A few threads or new posts attract a hundred or so clicks in a day or two, that suggests that there are some people that may be interested even if they don’t want to comment, which is fine. I look at threads in SA & Qld, Melbourne and Sydney, and others, I’m not always logged in, I’m interested but don’t often comment.
But I have noticed that the “Where is it WA” thread which is stickied is churning through clicks at what I think is a truly improbable rate. Are there really over one thousand two hundred people every twelve hours that want to look at a thread that no-one has contributed to for more than four years
For the sake of comparison I looked at a couple of similar stickied threads. “Where is it -Melbourne Suburban” (no new posts for over a year until the second day of my three day survey) is also ticking over at around one thousand one hundred clicks every twelve hours. “Where is it -Sydney Suburban” (this one does actually have a post from February, the first in almost a year) cracked two thousand for the first twelve hours of my survey, over three days averaging just under two thousand every twelve hours. (My survey involved checking every twelve hours from 6 a.m. on Tuesday 27 of March for 72 hours.)
So is this a bot or glitch or something? And does it contribute to the server load and therefore outages? Or maybe having a thread title "where is it...?" appears more often in search engines and more random people are clicking on the thread. I'm just curious.
