RP 3.10 Bugs and Feedback

Well now you bring up Railpage all right but when you click on the log in button it just keep's trying to load the page and then finally stops and you get an outage page. After hitting refresh it takes you straight in though and tells you, you are indeed logged in to Railpage. It has been like this for a while as well, but do not ask me exactly how long though. Yes getting a lot of outage pages here as well when you click on something but again a refresh usually clears it though.

As reported above, the Downloads section isn't working. Click on it or a direct link to an item (Hairyleg KMZ in this case returns the following message:

Cannot add menu grouping - no title given
/srv/Railpage.com.au/www/public_html/vendor/Railpage/railpagecore/lib/Submenu.php

red dragon
....... and the Downloads section is still an ongoing issue.  Latest message just a few minutes ago.

"Cannot add menu grouping - no title given
/srv/Railpage.com.au/www/public_html/vendor/Railpage/railpagecore/lib/Submenu.php
61"

As RailPages functionality decreases its ongoing relevance diminishes.  Hence the drop-off in users over the last few years.

Happy  dodoing,

Yes we have some defects which have been around for a while.  Michael is unable to fix all of them at the moment due to his own commitments. We are stuck between a rock and a hard place.

Traffic volumes are quite high at present and this beast costs a lot of money to maintain.

For at least a week now, logging in takes forever then I get the Outages page but I discovered that when I click back I find I have actually been logged in. Using Safari on a Mac.

I have the same problem as Brianr. I also use  Safari on an IMAC Desktop.

If I google Railpage and then click on any forum link presented by Google I find I am logged in.

In addition i have not received any email notifications of forum responses since before Christmas.

Any assistance to fix these problems would be appreciated, thanks.

When is the Latest Forum posts side pane going to be fixed?  It's still showing the latest post in November and before that in September.  I've brought this issue up several times before, but I've never had any response.

Drama at my house tonight: I have had an apparently routine Windows update that crashed my computer and took hours to sort out (on a Friday night, not happy) but now I'm finding that Railpage is working better. I can hit "like" on things, see pictures properly and have hypertext things back on the editing screens... silver lining.

Heres one that has popped up only recently and I found it on the thread in the South Australian section on Box vans in use on Snuggery Paper traffic. You go to go back or go to another thread and a little box pops up at the top of the screen  and states this on it.

From http://www.raipage.com,au

Now when you click on the OK button to clear it nothing happens all it it does is remove the 0 under the web address or adds it back in again. Repeatedly pressing the OK button though finally enables you to re use the page again. I have only encountered it on this thread though but it might show up on others.

I cannot post a screen shot of it as I cannot put photos etc up on here, However I can provide a link to a screenshot of it!

This has been a problem on and off for months but I agree that it has just returned in the last week or so. It seems to apply to only some posts but I agree that the Snuggery thread mentioned is certainly one of them.

Too much traffic in some threads? Bots or glitches contributing to Railpage outages?

Over here in WA there are not many people making comments on Railpage. For the last couple of years it seems to have got down to less than a dozen. Has everyone gone to facebook or somewhere? (I deleted facebook back in 2005) A few threads or new posts attract a hundred or so clicks in a day or two, that suggests that there are some people that may be interested even if they don’t want to comment, which is fine. I look at threads in SA & Qld, Melbourne and Sydney, and others, I’m not always logged in, I’m interested but don’t often comment.

But I have noticed that the “Where is it WA” thread which is stickied is churning through clicks at what I think is a truly improbable rate. Are there really over one thousand two hundred people every twelve hours that want to look at a thread that no-one has contributed to for more than four years?

For the sake of comparison I looked at a couple of similar stickied threads. “Where is it -Melbourne Suburban” (no new posts for over a year until the second day of my three day survey) is also ticking over at around one thousand one hundred clicks every twelve hours. “Where is it -Sydney Suburban” (this one does actually have a post from February, the first in almost a year) cracked two thousand for the first twelve hours of my survey, over three days averaging just under two thousand every twelve hours. (My survey involved checking every twelve hours from 6 a.m. on Tuesday 27 of March for 72 hours.)

So is this a bot or glitch or something? And does it contribute to the server load and therefore outages? Or maybe having a thread title "where is it...?" appears more often in search engines and more random people are clicking on the thread. I'm just curious.

For over a week I have been getting the 'Outage page' so I asked on another site I use (Austech) to see if it 'worked for them and one gave me a link which I have used a couple of times and others had got the 'Outage' page.
Today I opened the site by using my 'Bookmarks' without any trouble and then 'logged in'.

When trying to reply to a PM I got an outage page.

After I log in and am browsing the forums I'm constantly logged out and have to log in again.

Edit: I was logged out after submitting this post.

If you're in the Chrome browser, you can't directly go to the Railpage's URL. You need to use "Railpage Australia" as a search term. And similar to the Edge browser.

I use Chrome and can open RP directly. In my case I have http://www.railpage.com.au/f-s-id-newposts.htm bookmarked as that's how I interact. I click on the bookmark and everything (generally) works fine. Am I doing something wrong?
  DJPeters Assistant Commissioner

I use Chrome and have it on the Chrome home page that opens when you click on Chrome and when it opens I then click on the Railpage Icon in the centre of the page and it then opens the sign in page for me no problems at all. If you cannot simply do this on Chrome then I might suggest you have a problem with Chrome either you have accidentally blocked it in Chrome or you might need to update Chrome.  I have Chrome set to automatically up date every time I use it saves a lot of hassles.

A lot of server reconfiguration has been completed meaning a lot faster page loads.  A lot of the code has now been reviewed and changes will need to be made to the railcams module as the API we use is now being blocked based on our IP address.  The server outage message is code we cannot currently locate. Previous developers are unsure where the issue is.  We are working through this last issue which when fixed will then allow us to do a code freeze and checkin and the developers engaged will then work under Paul to develop and upgrade.

Thanks for your patience.  We have made a lot of progress fixing the sever side.  If you look at page load times and memory useage this is now the best it has been.

I give up.  I can't be bothered anymore.  I've had so much trouble trying to log-in and just continually get the outage page.  What's the point of continuing when you can't even get the basics right by being able to get to the home page.  It's a miracle that I got on here in a roundabout manner. It's a waste of space.  Regrettably, this will be my last post.  Goodbye!

I have been unable to get to the home page now for something like 2 months, prior to that I would get the outage page but a quick refresh got me to the home page, now that does not work.  I can only get on to RP when I open one of the threads I am following and I clink the open link.

I use 3 browsers. IE, Mozilla and Chrome, are the same, and it frustrates me that I need to have that many browsers to be able to get to various groups.  Thankfully the new IE does the job, 99.9% of the time and only need Mozilla for the other .01%.

I hope that things improve soon, at least it gets me off the computer sooner.

Hi All,

We are well aware of the issues and a lot of work to clean this up has already been completed.  We are struggling to find the code the devs MGH and co. wrote which has this silly outage message as the servers are not overloaded.  They have been optimised.

It is frustrating for all.  The new devs have had to take this over and clean up.

Once this is completed including fixing the caching and other issues we will then check all code into the new repo and the second tier devs will be able to then take over and complete code re-write railcams as this code has issues and flickr firewalled us off because of the way we do things.

We will get there.  We have the horsepower it is more a case of understand how it is all written now and what needs to change.  We will be  much better for it.

to enter the site and login it is better to just use http://www.railpage.com.au/f.htm

Regards
Brian
