Melbourne Metro rail: Tunnels to go deeper underground to keep trams running

News article: Melbourne Metro: Tunnels to go deeper underground

Plans to dig a shallow rail tunnel just 10 metres beneath Swanston Street have been binned by the Andrews government, which has chosen instead to go deep and put a new CBD station almost 40 metres underground to avoid digging up the city's spine.

Yeah, and when they finish, if the TBMs are not rooted, then they should turn them around and bore a whole lot more tunnels for the Metro. Our underground sucks in comparison to other cities.

The general design of a TBM makes It Impossible to back them back through the finished tunnel (as the boring cutter head will not fit through the newly lined tunnel)

To recover the TBM the machine would need to bore It's way to the surface or to an extraction shaft / pit.

Many TBM's when they have finished their boring work are stripped of recoverable equipment and just abandon In their own tomb.

I believe the ones being used on the North West Rail Link in Sydney are going to be parked in a dead end and just left there - I suppose they're either not worth recovering and/or worn out.

The NWRL TBMs are only, IIRC, 6m in diameter. Is this enough for Melbourne single deck trains?  This is definitely NOT enough for Sydney double deck trains.

Golly, you guys are laying it on a bit thick!

Can't you take your political prejudices and start up a dedicated "I hate state Liberals too" tread to compliment the existing "I hate Abbott" and "I hate Turnbull" threads?

You can get it all out of you system there and leave "secular" threads to intelligent, non political discussion. Smile

And that's intelligent?

No Bogong they are not laying it on thick. You are just way too touchy when it comes to any criticism of the last Coalition Government or anything Coalition for that matter.

The Napthine Government did nothing of note except rip $600 Million from the TAFE Sector and had tried to rush through a toll road which they were not going to build according to their manifesto for the 2010 State election in which they duly won. Public Transport in this state is highly politicized and as such we have a right to question policies regarding PT, of which many of the Coalitions was flawed.

Matthew Guy deserves all the criticism heaped on him. He was so pro developer as planning minister it is not funny. And that Clayton's Rail Capacity project, if you believe that would get off the ground the you are kidding yourself. The E-W link would chew all the immediate funds and if they think of constructing the rail link, at best construction will not start until early next decade, after the tollway link is built.

His replies to the Melbourne Metro Project is one of half baked statements and one word cliches such as "botched". How the hell does he know it is botched, is he an engineer? He would get more respect if he had asked intelligent questions like "Why is the lead time for this project so long" and "can you provide detailed costings for the quoted $1 Billion for the South Yarra station?

And as a side note, Malcolm Turnbull is a good decent man, with a social conscience. Tony Abbott a total muppet so good riddence.

I witnessed guy on channel 7 news tonight. Why would he be saying the project is botched as he has not seen all the detail. This comment is disappointing because it would be nice to see both sides of politics working together on this project.

A personal rant, you have been warned Wink.

Hmmmmmmmmm, When has lack of knowledge stopped a major party politician from saying something. If one looks at the RFR project the liberal party in opposition definitely spread information that was not true, so why would this project be any different.
Are these guys REALLY that stupid, when will they learn that telling the real story will most likely provide a better outcome for all.

Exactly, your job in opposition shouldn't be to oppose everything - Matthew Guy should be looking at the detail but supporting it overall as a plus for Victoria.

Ah that brings back some memories.  I recall the Liberals talking down the 4 lines project.  Too expensive and not required and a waste etc.  Probably been one of the better projects over the last 20 years save for the singling of the Bendigo Line beyond Kyneton which they were told not to do.

Exactly the point I was making, Matthew Guy will go all out and oppose every single thing and it makes him look like an idiot and I hope to god that he never gets in as Premier.

Yes, I am aware of that, I was using the 'turn them around' comment to mean recycle them.
