Cool.

Perhaps the first train will be a southbound from Brisbane?

Given there are three current threads going on SCT you can be excused this time, but it has already been stated elsewhere that the first SCT operated train will be 7MB9 tonight from Melbourne to Brisbane.

The movement noted above is the normal movement that has been going on for several years attaching SCT loading to Aurizon services.

Petan wrote; 7MB9, maybe the first into Bromelton QLD, now 58 KPH northbound approaching Newport Melbourne 7:09PM (QLD time) Saturday 21JAN2017 with loco SCT004 recorded on the Railpage tracker. Not far north of the SCT rail yard at Laverton in Melbourne. The path taken symbol on the Railpage train tracker shows the train as reversing out of the SCT Laverton yard.

A question for the Melbourne locals please; Google Earth measuring tool suggests the tail of the train would need to near the mainline entry points to have a train over 1000 metres with the loco well inside the yard. Does that suggest any train out of that yard is limited to around 1000 metres and the train will increase length with loading from the SCT Wodonga yard?

If this is already answered on another thread, please post the URL please as clearly I missed that thread in all the excitement of a train actually coming north to start the use of the long promised Bromelton SCt terminal. Some years ago we even had local politicians attempting to get votes by promising the SCT and other yards in that Bromelton area would never be build.

That Railpage train radar path taken software is really outstanding Smile

EDIT: I see Bevans has just posted similar departure report with pictures Smile

Noticed 2 YouTube clips which I watched last night.   Certainly as a first train it was impressive with the three units and 39 vehicles which included as mentioned a crew car which was placed quite some length back in the train (approx. 10 vehicles).   Only 1 container flat that I could see with the rest of the train being the various types of SCT vans.

As industry returns from its traditional Summer Holiday Slumber it will be interesting to see how the length and composition of the train develops.   Will also be interesting if it can be ascertained, what the volume of freight going north out of Wodonga/Barnawatha and inbound from the north will be in addition to the Melbourne loading.

One of the factors for the development of Barnawartha would have to be to take some pressure off the very busy loading and unloading sheds at SCT Laverton.

Until now, a lot of SPC and other Goulburn Valley products have been trucked to Melbourne for loading onto the Perth bound train.  This loading can now be trucked across to Barnawartha for train loading and unloading.  The benefits of this is in reduced truck mileage and it also frees up room at Laverton for SCT to take on more customers at that terminal.

It is excellent to see a good size train making up the first dedicated service to Brisbane. From what I am led to believe, the initial carting of vans to Brisbane on Aurizon trains came at some insistence from important SCT customers that they wanted a Brisbane logisitics service.  Once again, SCT have taken the bull by the horns and turned that request into another key part of the business.  So many of SCT's customers are national retailers that we can expect to see the Brisbane train flourish as time goes on.

Do you mean Brisbane here?  Because Melbourne seems to be a natural loading point for Perth freight from the GV instead of Barnawartha (though i wonder if/when it is SG if SCT would look to load in the Goulburn Valley).

Would be at least 3 hours from Goulburn valley to Laverton. What a shame Goulburn valley is still on BG whizh is holding up rail development.

I think Perth is correct James. SCT's customer for GV loading is a large national company and the loading from Barnawatha can be easily railed to Parkes to be added to the Perth bound service (SCT's biggest and most important?) as well as Sydney, Brisbane or Adelaide via Melbourne or Adelaide the long way via Parkes as there is SCT loading taken off the Perth Train at Port Germain where a shuttle service takes it down to Adelaide.

Ok i see that arguement.  Does SCT run trains to Parkes from the south though?

Why would Melbourne be the natural loading point?  It is two hours from Shep. to Barnawartha.  Half an hour unloading and the truck is back in Shep. for tucker break.  Two trips a day is far more productive than the three hour trip to Laverton (if the ring road is behaving) plus, often an hour or so in the queue to unload at SCT.  It all means only one round trip on a driver's shift.

There is no SCT rail service between Melbourne and Parkes unless it goes via Adelaide.  There is occasions where trucks will deliver loading from Parkes to Melbourne and vice versa where circumstances require.  Barnawartha loading goes to Melbourne for adding to the Perth train.  It can now also go direct to Brisbane.  There is no Sydney rail depot and no plan for one, so far as I am aware.
