Visiting Canberra

A mate and I (plus our partners) will be visiting Canberra for 5 days in mid June. What's about in the way of trains/preservation groups/rail museums? We were hoping to check out the Garratt but obviously that won't be happening now. We will have a hire car but we don't really want to be going too far afield from Canberra (we'll be lucky to be granted a day of trains!).

Any advice will be graciously recieved

Are they still open despite all that has transpired?

Pretty sure it's still closed.

If you are looking for modern rail action then Yass Jct and Goulburn are both located on the Main South railway line which depending on time of day and day of the week can be quite busy. Both are an hour's drive form Canberra.

If you interested into railway archaeology Captains Flat is worth a visit. The old railway station, plus an interesting mine site

No, the Canberra Railway Museum in Kingston is definitely closed for the time being. Try the Goulburn Roundhouse Museum instead.

Thanks all for the advice, I reckon we might check out Goulburn, then maybe go trackside for a bit.

1. Goulburn has a Roundhouse

2. Cooma Monaro Railway

3. Trainworks at Thirlmere is only 2 hours up the motorway from Canberra and has a non operational garret on display. I'm not 100% sure on this but 6029 might actually be at thirlmere. Maybe someone else can clear this up.

2. Cooma-Monaro Railway is non-operational atm, but are working towards running again.

3. 6029 is definitely at Thirlmere, but I don't think it is "on display," ie it won't be easy to see/get near. 6040 is on display.
