The row of fast-food outlets adjacent to Young & Jacksons on Swanston Street have now been closed for demolition to make way for the CBD South station entrance.

Just today they were demolishing a long-vacant house next to the path between South Yarra station and Chapel St (Lovers Walk?) overlooking the rail lines - signs up said it was to do with the Metro Tunnel, no idea why they need a spot up there though. A mansion across the road recently sold for some millions of dollars so the neighbours won't be happy if they're doing heavy work there.

(not directly related but: there's also a sign up notifying of a plan to roof over the tracks directly opposite South Yarra station and build a number of three or four story buildings on Toorak Rd)

I would of simply called it Metro Rail Tunnel - Construction.
That is a better term of describing the stage of works it is current in.

Anyways there will be a new Park Street Tram stop built over the next holidays as part of the Metro tunnel project. I've heard that they will be soon be up to the public to name the 4 major boring machines digging the actual tunnels. Hopefully someone name one of them Mcboringface for the giggles.

AFAIK that demolition is actually for a new apartment block going up, not related to Metro Tunnel.

There is indications that Lovers Walk will be closed when construction at South Yarra commences. Already they are closing the water mains and moving power poles and lines in the area where they cross the Williams Rd bridge as that has to be demolished and rebuilt to cover 6 tracks.

The construction plans for South Yarra are reasonably informative: http://metrotunnel.vic.gov.au/construction/south-yarra,

First video in the post above highlights a sewer being built not sure now that relates to a rail tunnel?

Actually, 15 William street demolition is for Metro Tunnel construction. They say here on this works notice that the site is to become a support site and layover area. There is apparently a construction hut on the other side: http://metrotunnel.vic.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0003/134364/MM-NOTIFICATION-20170818-15-William-Street-demolition.pdf

The current tunnel is over 100 years old and lies in the construction zone for Domain Station. They are building a new sewer line which will be out of the way of Domain Station site.

Apologies, I did just assume that the apartment block had commenced construction.
I wonder if the apartment will go ahead afterwards? And then if the off-the-plan buyers understood that there'd be quite a delay in construction commencement?

Some of the first images of the tunnels linking the station near the state library.

Why revive this thread with only a few posts? We've been posting building updates in the main one and people said it was better to keep everything there.

I'm not surprised to see this. This is normal at the commencement of tunnel building. Tunnel builders are a small and traditional (and some might say superstitious) community, and even have a patron saint

Indeed, St Barbara is the patron saint of Miners and Tunnellers.  I believe that's a statue of her in the little white house thingie behind the priest.

This looks suspiciously like a completed Portal at South Yarra just before trains begin running again.

By the June/July this year you’ll see the TBMs coming out from South Yarra. They’ll start digging at Anzac station in Feb/March. Good to see the prep work at South Yarra is going well.

Meanwhile the first two TBMs will come out at South Kensington in February/March

At a loss to understand if the tunnelling is so fast then why not Keep the machines digging and do the suburban loop or better metro 2 straight away.

It's all the preparation required to get the launch and retrieval sites prepared that takes most of the time, and probably costs that slow things down.

Will this complete the section between Library and Kensington?

No, only the first of the tunnels from Arden. The second tunnel will be done about a month later. Then the TBMs get moved back to Arden to start digging towards Parkville & then on to State Library. They are supposed to start towards Parkville about mid year
