V/Line Incidents/Disruptions #2

I originally posted about this in another thread but so as not to take that thread even further off course than I already have I'll continue it here.

Track work is taking place this week on the Bendigo line. A long string of new concrete sticks has been laid out next to the West track from around the 72km post heading in a down direction right up to the point where the 160 KM/H board marks the change in line speed

The placement of the new ties corresponds almost perfectly with spots where there are still timber sleepers remaining and it looks like this work will remove pretty much all timber from this section.

It remains to be seen whether the line speed will be increased from 130 > 160 in this section

Also of interest (well to me anyway) is whether V/Line will take advantage of Wednesdays industrial action to get some of the work done during daylight hours instead of doing the work at night.

I will hazard a guess and say the line speed will probably not be increased. On the other hand, given the recent rush of anxiety about fast DMU running on Class 2 and 2M track, it will probably enable the current line speeds to be maintained.

That's shocking, not to mention potentially dangerous at that time of night

PSOs staff Geelong station at that time of day. The curtailed service in question was already delayed significantly so it was something more like a 20 minute wait at Geelong rather than 45 minutes.

Looks like a bit of a meltdown at V/line this afternoon:

Good old V Line -lurching from one disaster to another with monotonous regularity.

I'm glad V Line doesn't supply radio coverage for Air Traffic Control.

Why faults with radio? It's not as if there's something new about it.

Much more reasonable in that case, however regarding safety I can say I've had to wait at Geelong station at that time of night before and not even seen the PSOs over about a 20 minute period on occasion, was uncomfortable to say the least with some ferals running around. It's a big area to cover for two officers too, not like some of the little suburban Melbourne stations where they can stand on the platform and see everything going on

On a Rail Replacement coach from Southern Cross to Castlemaine this morning. Both AM Swan Hill trains cancelled today. I only found out at the very last minute so instead of a bus to Footscray it was a quick dash into the Coach Terminal.

Not happy, I deliberately avoided yesterday's industrial action only to wake up to this. What the hell is going on V/Line!

Perhaps some trains or drivers out of position?

General community sentiment about V/line is rather poor these days.  Probably more a reflection on many years of being under-resourced and over-stretched, sadly.

Let’s just hope there is still enough in the kitty to pay for the next re-branding exercise. And the new uniforms. It usually fixes everything

The sad part is, I don't think the corporates at V/Line seem to understand this - the impression from them is 'that, well people are using the service, therefore it must be good, and we must be well liked'. Sadly, most people don't actually have a choice in using them.

No driver in Swan Hill for the first Up train due to yesterdays industrial action; the carriage set for the Down was docked but then was taken away again. Not sure of the reason but I don't believe there was a spare set available at that time to replace it if the set was indeed faulty.

As much as i'm not a fan of management at the moment due to the current EA negotiations (or lack thereof), I would actually disagree with this. Most know what is needed or what could be improved but don't have the required funding or resources. Of course just like any other business they're not going to publicy talk down the V/Line 'brand' or bite the hand that feeds them.

As much as we may jest here on RP the V/Line notification system is actually really good and things are a million times clearer that what they were a few years ago. Almost real time information enables pax to make decisions around travel such as electing to take a later or earlier train, making alternative arrangements, electing not to travel etc.

Take my trip Monday AM as an example. I normally get a bus to Footscrazy and then jump on the Down Swanners heading for sunny Castlemaine. I looked at my phone just after I got up and saw that my service was cancelled so I high tailed in to Southern Cross to make sure I got a seat on a (hopefully not all stopping) rail replacement coach.

Had i not got that warning i would have headed to Footscray as usual, walked across to P4 only to find that the service was cancelled. Then I would have had to make my back across to Irving St possibly missing the bus or getting a slow coach stopping Watergardens / Gizzy / Woodend / Kyneton / CME which adds around 45 minutes to the trip.

No, it's not good that the train was canned but yes, it is good that information is timely, clear and precise to enable me and thousands like me to get where they are going.
