Does "Search" function ever work properly?

Before starting a new thread on a subject, it is wise and constructive to use the "Search" to see if a suitable thread already exists and use that one. But the search function doesn't always work, for whatever reason.

For example, searching for "Tanzanian Standard Gauge" doesn't seem to find anything, not even a thread containing just the word "Tanzania".

This problem has reported before.

Search can only can pick up ancient threads for some reason. More recent ones do not come up.

Been a long term problem and a variety of Cranky Pants get upset that an ancient thread has been reopened (I never understood that so long as the post relates to the thread) or get cranky that a new thread has been started when a recent thread on the same topic has been opened.

The Mods do a good job cleaning up though.

Should the search function in RP be ditched? Or should RP incorporate google into the search function?

At the moment the RP search function is not really user friendly.

Search is still not your friend.

I typed Portland into the search box, and the vertical bars that replaces the magnifying glass just scrolls across the box. Been doing that for 5 minutes.

Just use your preferred search engine (Google, Bing, Duck Duck Go etc) and enter (without quotes) "Portland site:Railpage.com.au"

Yep. That's what the Chrome console indicates. It's complaining that the cert expired on that server so once it's been fixed, it should be fine.

can you please list the domains which are indicating expired?

Brian, only api.railpage.com.au - because the search path appears to be https://api.railpage.com.au/v2/search

Would be nice to see the search function back working to help find the amazing info on here.

I have been using the google search for the info.

That's very weird.

I note that it works fine on my work computer; it does not work on my iPhone or iPad in desktop mode.

Out of interest, have you tried https://www.railpage.com.au/search?

Gallery search is working but the forums data is back to 2016.  Interesting.

The certificate is causing the issue with the front page.  Are you using IE for the search form the front page when you say it works?

Me? No - Chrome on macOS. I'd die if I were using IE on a Mac!

Yes the same happens here for me using a Windows 10 computer and Chrome as the browser. It just hangs and does nothing.

I wonder if it's a caching issue.

Has anyone tried to clear their cache? Ctrl+F5 if you are on Windows.

I will get to swapping the cert today.  Just a little busy trying to sort out the new network connection.
