East West Link or ?????

Traffic in Melbourne is getting worse and worse. The east of Melbourne is jammed full of cars and the Eastern Fwy around Hoddle St/Alexandria Pde is full of traffic

So what is the solution ? Well there is going to be a need for one and it may either be road or rail

Doncaster Rail has been dismissed there is no capacity and people on here don’t want it nor is it viable anymore

Metro 2 needs construction to start within 5 years but that doesn’t address the issue fully about the traffic congestion around Collingwood

The proposed busway will only carry 2000-4000 people maximum and that’s using articulated vehicles so it will do nothing to address congestion

So what do we do now - something needs to be done to address this issue or you leave it and do nothing

East West Link costs VIC not one cent but is still a dud project. However it will relive congestion at  least for those going from east to west. It doesn’t address the many going into the city

So what do you do ?

I am not a fan of more freeway or tollway construction but with the amount of additional traffic that will be generated by the North East Link & the Westgate tunnel, both State Labor projects, some sort of East West link will have to be built eventually or traffic in the City & Inner North will become even more gridlocked than it is now.

Wouldn't they benefit by not having cross-city traffic getting in their way?

It looks to me like the project is firming up if this is really the best that opponents can come up with.

Metro 2 combined with some form of Doncaster Rail would be my preferred option. If design work was started next year, construction could begin in 2022 and the whole thing could be built by 2032.

East West link doesn't solve the number one traffic problem with that part of town ie:- the volume of traffic coming off the Eastern Fwy and on to Hoddle St, in fact it is much more likely to increase the traffic along Hoddle St.

The only sure fire way to ease traffic congestion is to give people a genuine alternative to using their own car. That means better bus networks and more rail, not more roads.

Now understand this people...

Under the Andrews government and with the support of two election wins specifically opposing the East-West Link, this project to enable motorists in Liberal held seats to get to the City and the specifically the airport without traffic lights will NOT proceed under the current Victorian government lest the government LOSE the 2022 election being hailed as hypocrites.

Nothing more to see here folks...move along. Smile

I agree with Mike. east west is not happening. Feds don't build roads they just fund them and the victorian government isn't building the east west link.

$4 billion towards a project (with a benefit-cost ratio of less than 1) that, in the Auditor-General's report, was costed at $16 billion plus?

Brisbane's Clem Jones Tunnel and Sydney's Cross City Tunnel (went broke twice) are prime examples of how glowing predictions of traffic figures can fail to materialise.

Scott Morrison has to face an election here in Victoria before Daniel Andrews does.

Another Federal election will come before the next State election.

If Federal Labor pull off a will, EWL funding will vanish

If Federal Coalition hang on, EWL funding remains

2022 State election Labor Is tipped to pull off an easy win ?

Working with Federal Labor Gov, EWL dead

Working with Federal Coalition Gov, the EWL funding stalemate probably continues.

2022 State election If Coalition pull off a win

Working with Federal Labor, no Federal EWL funding, Libs might go knocking on Transurbans door for a deal.

Working with Federal Coalition, construction of EWL would begin as soon as realistically possible.

Mike, the Labor government is building massive road projects on both the east & west sides of the city which will generate equally massive amounts of additional traffic. Despite the glib comment about the East Link just being so that motorists from the east can get to the airport quicker all of that extra traffic has to end up somewhere.

We all know that the government really cancelled East West at the time to protect Labor seats from the Greens in the inner north. Maybe the cost benefit analysis wasn't great but I suspect completion of these two road projects in a few years time will change that. For political reasons the present government won't do it but as I said in a previous post some sort of East West link will need to provided in the future.

Did scomo not just face an election in Victoria this last weekend and still win. Cross city is a failure because it is such a short piece of road and people are not interested in paying the exorbitant toll to use it. East west will be a failure because all it will do is funnel more cars in to a space it can not handle. Doncaster needs a rail line as urgently.

It may well be the opposite. RACV now say that EWL is a low priority for that exact reason. They are advocating Doncaster rail instead.

I don’t know what has sparked RACV’s enthusiasm for public and active transport in the last 12 months or so but it’s most enjoyable.

Again I must emphasise the project will NOT be going ahead under the current government.

So, unless Victorian Labor implodes during this term, or if they are not endorsed by the people in 2022, this project is on ice, at least until some time after 2026.

One more point to consider with this project was the way it was planned to decimate Royal Park and that aspect has conveniently been forgotten.

ScoMo should just offer an olive branch and direct the funds for Webb Dock freight rail and get the wheels turning on MM2.  Dan Andrews should seriously provide the business plans to the Feds since they'll have a far better BCR than any EW-Link.

That should make ScoMo popular with far more of the electorate IMO by the time 2022 comes around.

I'm being too optimistic here.  But can we at least have some bipartisanship!!!

Doncaster Rail is a dead duck. Airport Rail, Metro Tunnel 2 & the Suburban Loop are all ahead of it in the queue.

The RACV public policy manager is quoted in the news today as calling for a fresh review of the East West corridor due to the construction of North East link & Westgate tunnel which will generate large amounts of additional traffic.

He might actually do this now that he is free of turnbull, abbott, bishop and other back stabbers. He might actually be able to become more bi partisan and seek to see viable projects done. The hsr and orbital are a no go but other projects that labor wanted to do might actually be a possibility.

The project didn't stack up then but this article was written in December 2014 before the State Labor government had even thought of the Westgate tunnel or the North East link. It is a different ball game now.
