Michael was only publishing on a Saturday and Ron Tandberg, The Age's only other cartoonist of note is long dead.I have only ever bought a Murdoch paper once that I can remember - this year to get the Demons Grand Final souvenir stuff for a Melbourne Member and supporter stuck in home quarantine and I didn't read those anyway so I wouldn't know
I too have not picked up a copy of The Age in a long time as I now read online, however to call it a rag compared to the true Murdoch Melbourne rag is a bit of a stretch
Mike.
The Age comment section its the biggest echo chamber you will find. The same people every single day posting pro-Dan comments. I am generally an ALP voter but the sheer devotion to Dan is sickening.

Haven't the Herald Sun in probably 20 years. Ill take your word for it that it is even more of an echo chamber. I can believe that. The Age comment section its the biggest echo chamber you will find. Really? Have you read the Herald Sun lately!
I was a great admirer of a lot of Leunig's cartoons for a number of years; indeed I once had a polo shirt with his "Mr Curly" shown above the words "Innocent Bystander".Shopping Bags in Autumn was my fave, brought me to tears when I saw it at the NGV many years ago
It seems to me that he has become progressively embittered as the years have passed, and this is a great shame. He was always off-beat which I like, but it's now gone too far and that is very disappointing.
So when am I going to get cancelled for saying that "Transwoman aren't woman" or "That churches and mosques should still have the ability to fire staff if they live a lifestyle that is contrary to its ethics"?The Age comment section its the biggest echo chamber you will find. Generally speaking I would prefer James Merlino or Jill Hennessey as Premier rather than Dan Andrews. He is very authoritarian within his party and his is too factional. (Martin Pakula is still in the cabinet whilst Jenny Mykonos had to resign).
However, to me he is far preferable to the dog-whistling, culture war peddling rabble that is the opposition. Georgie Crozier, Bernie Finn, Tim Smith, David Davis, David Hodgetts! Do me a favour! It is Dan, Dan and Dan every time. The Liberals/Nationals have good talented people, those twits aren't it and the sooner Matt Guy realizes this. And I still havent forgotten that absolute disgrace of a campaign they ran in 2018.
To illustrate this is from an opposition meeting
A Victorian opposition video call descended into chaos – and a whole lot of swearing – after some members furiously rejected a shadow minister’s promise that the Coalition would not alter the Andrews government’s law banning gay conversion therapy.
Mr Newbury (a good and decent man), gave an “iron-clad guarantee” the party would not pursue any changes to the controversial law, prompting fury from his colleagues.
“From a Nationals point of view, we will not be supporting James on this position and he can go and get f---ed, simple as that,” Nationals leader Peter Walsh told Tuesday’s meeting.
I mean Gay conversion therapy and the Nats can't even bring themselves to say that is wrong. So its Dan for me and the Coalition (unless they listen to James Newbury) can go f@%* themselves.
Yes I think it is extreme to cancel Leunig, but really to compare Vaccine mandates to the events of Tianamen Square. Really. Comparing the feelings of some anti-vaxxer twits to the plight of the Chinese! Clumsy at best and sickening at worst.
No one is saying that not having the vaccine is against the law. You just can't go to a lot of public places.
Some will be unable to have vaccines for medical reasons and for them there will be exceptions. For the rest I have no problem with them being excluded.

Given the way the current State Govt and its #istandwithdan sycophants are behaving, and how some of their new legislation is worded, it won't be long before I'm probably dragged before a VEOHRC interrogator...
And that would probably make some of you happy.

Transwoman aren't woman is your opinion and you are entitled to that. Whatever your opinion though, Transgender people should be treated with respect and not be discriminated against.
That churches and mosques should still have the ability to fire staff if they live a lifestyle that is contrary to its ethics"?
Whose ethics and what teachings? Point to me in the Koran or the Bible where anything to do with being Gay, Lesbian or Transgender is mentioned. And being gay or lesbian is not a lifestyle.

Happy to respond -Isn't it wonderful to see somebody, Carnot in this case, using a book full of fiction to try and prove something relevant.
The Bible:
Leviticus 18:22
Deuteronomy 22:5
Romans 1:26-27
1 Corinthians 6:9-11
1 Timothy 1:8-10
Jude 7
And marriage is defined in Genesis 2:24 and repeated by Jesus in Mark 10:4-6.
You know what I find galling. Is the fact that people who call themselves Christian feel that the LGBTI community should not exist or at least accept discrimination towards whilst getting upset and defensive because some question certain aspects of their faith.Happy to respond -Isn't it wonderful to see somebody, Carnot in this case, using a book full of fiction to try and prove something relevant.

it's the same book that has the earth existing before the sun,
a flat earth with the firmament supported on four pillars,
a gang of amateur boat builders whose efforts cannot be replicated in a seaworthy craft to this day,
the whole earth said to be flooded when the shape and size of the earth was not discovered until centuries later,
the right to sell your children into slavery, and so on and so on.
And just to add to the fun, three of Carnot's selections were written by one of the world's great misogynists.
Take a trip to Disneyland - Fantasyland is in there.
I take a different viewpoint. The cartoon has made reference to one of the most momentous occasions in history.Kind of a dig about compulsory vaccinations.Strange, perhaps but I don't see anything in this other than a topical cartoon.
Either way it is shocking that he has been sacked.

That person in front of the tank in Tiananmen Square has sacrificed everything. A very brave man.
Anti-Vaxxers have sacrificed nothing. Except possibly their brains.

It's not humour at all, nor is it intended to be. Like many of Leunig's drawings it is a piece of commentary on our society not an attempt at humour.I take a different viewpoint. The cartoon has made reference to one of the most momentous occasions in history.I agree totally.

I think the Tiananmen Square happenings need similar respect to events like the Holocaust, the Khmer Rouge's activities, 9/11 and other terrorism type incidents, etc - it will always be 'too soon' for humour to be directed at any of them, and even if by some means 'sufficient' time had passed, the 'struggles' of the anti vaccination crowds in developed economies are just not even close to the struggles of those involved in any of those other events.
Shopping Bags in Autumn was my fave, brought me to tears when I saw it at the NGV many years agoGot the title wrong (Father time is a cruel master) but here it is in all of it's glory to show those who think that Leunig's scribblings are supposed to be humorous. His work takes the avid reader through a full range of emotions from hilarious through whimsy to sad and sometimes all the way to outrageous
Leunig at his best, years ahead of his time and cuttingly insightful as usual
I suppose the issue is even if he has become embittered is that a reason to can him? Dissenting views are what used to make the Age such a fine paper IMO
