If your file (for example) is named S29E138 then 29 is the latitude and 138 is the longitude. See how the lat is first then the lon. All the hgt files are like that.

Use the RGE to find the lon lat positions and create terrain with it, then download the correct dem data. Use 3dem to convert it into a tif file. The tutorial on atomic systems will crash your computer most likely. YOU DO NOT WANT THE BLUE SCREEN. Load the right tif file THEN open the route. You should see squares outlined in red. Now select create route terrain. Once done shut demex down.

Please do not misinterpret my asinine comments as something intelligible

It is possible to move your allready created route to the correct lat/long co-ords, however the process is very complicated and stressfull. There was a thread a while ago about it on UKTrainSim, try searching for it there.

On this location where the DEM data files are, (ftp://ae0mss21u.ecus.nasa.gov/srtm/Australia/) The files are named in a format that I don't understand. For Example S29E139.hgt.zip, I know the Latitude & Longitude locations for Thomson & Walhalla in this format:

Thomson:
-Latitude=37 (little o which I assume = degrees ) 57' 44" S
-Longitude= 146 (little oe which I assume = degrees ) 25' 5" E

Walhalla:
-Latitude=37 (little o which I assume = degrees ) 57' 10" S
-Longitude= 141 (little o which I assume = degrees ) 26' 50" E

So how can I identify which file I will require from that file?

Thanks in advance, Rodney

As mentioned in the first post of this thread, the file names are the South West corner of the 1 degree squares. Your example of S29E139.hgt.zip covers the area S28 to S29, E139 to E140. So you would need the files S37E141 to S37E146 and possibly a few others to fill in gaps. That seems like an awfull lot of data. Have you got the Lat/Lon correct? How far is it between those towns?

Scratch that. Should be S38, not 37

The co-ordinates he has listed are wrong. 141°21'50" is in the South East corner of Sth Australia. It should be 146. You should only need S38E146

Citizens,

I have found another (see earlier post) satellite imaging site which you may find useful:

www.keyhole.com

You have to download imaging software (19MB) to view the images. Covers the entire world. This site charges to view the information. You can trial the system for 7 days. This has a watermarked Trial Mode over the satellite image.

There are 2 versions. The commercial version costs US$599.00 while the personal home use is US$29.00.

These images have been collated over a period of time. Some of the images from rural areas are over 4 years old so recent track work out ‘in the bush’ may not be visible. The urban areas are more recent though.

An added feature of this imaging software is the ability to not only zoom in and out vertically and pan, you can rotate your view and even look at the earth surface at an oblique angle getting a good idea of the topology.

I could (and did) spend hours there. Check it out.

For those people who are building routes in WA check out the following site:

http://www.landonline.com.au/skyviewwa/content/asp/skyviewwa_index.asp?product_group_id=78

The Department of Land Information has aerial photos of most of the urban areas in WA.

Bob,

In case you have not been informed the link to the FTP server at the beginning of this thread has been updated and is now valid.

Thanks to whoever found the new location and updated the link.

Regards,

Marek.

I had a look this afternoon and it appears there is now a Version 2.
ftp://e0srp01u.ecs.nasa.gov/srtm/version2/SRTM3/
Has anyone tried this and is it any good for our use.

I've tried them and could see no difference. From reading the docs, the only difference is large bodies of water are now flat and not covered in holes and spikes.

Cheers,
David.
