gday all long time visitor first time user,
i have been having a bit of an issue with my nsw routes (nothing bad or anything) it's just that i wish to 'update' some of the routes for my home use purposes. Now i don't want this thread into a copyright brawl but i wish to 'update' the following
illawarra route - no signals ( i wish to put some nsw signals in the route but i'm not sure exactly how to)
sydwest route - no boom gates and bells at some of the crossings (the crossing at Clarendon is the wrong way round - no offence to the suthor of the sydwest route)
i want to update these routes to make them even better and like i said before i DO NOT want to start any copyright issues hopefully
thanks a bunch if help is offered
yours truly,
yours truly

In relation to copyright, what you do with routes and rolling stock in the privacy of your own home is your business. It’s only when you start redistributing other peoples work without their consent that copyright rears it’s ugly head and becomes an issue.
Adding boom gates and bells should be reasonably simple. I suspect setting up signals will require a little more effort.
Have you read the tech docs that are on the MSTS CD (#1 I believe)?
Michael Vone’s ‘Step by Step Route Building’ is a must have for those wishing to get an depth knowledge on route building for MSTS. Its’ available from:
http://trainsimulatorworld.com/catalog/b506.htm
If you don’t want to go to that expense my I suggest reading the tutorials at the steam4me site:
http://steam4me.railpage.org.au/trainsim/tutorials/index.html
If you can’t find what you need there then the next option is to use the search button to find the information you are looking for. Search the route building forums here, at train-sim.com and uktrainsim.com. After six years I’m sure it’s been asked (and answered) before.

thanks for that superheatedsteam,
i had a look through the links and there is a couple of questions i wish to ask
in the building a signal link on steam4me site, does building a NSW signal require the same stages as building an older type signal?
also if just wish to copy the signal files from the blue mountains shapes route folder and place them in the illawarra shapes folder, am i simply able to do that or do i have to copy the coding from the REF file as well? becasue i've been at this problem for ages and i just simply can't fix it.
i don't want to sound like a nag, but because i have now had the chance to seek help i'm just taking that opportunity
thanks once again superheatedsteam

I suspect so. I’m not sure.

I suspect you will have to copy the coding (relating to the signals) from the REF file as well.

You are not a nag but I don’t know the answers to your questions, only were you can find the answers. I have never setup ‘working’ signals on a route only static ones. I have read up on the subject of signals a while ago but do not recall the details of what is involved.
As I suggested, either purchase Michael Vone’s book for the low down on MSTS signals or search the forums.
Searching the word ‘signals’ here I got “Search found 92 matches”
Searching the word ‘signals’ at train-sim.com I got “1898 topics match your criteria”
Searching the word ‘signals’ at uktrainsim.com I got Search found 1272 matches”.
I’m sure your questions will have been answered before. Seek and ye shall find.
Happy hunting.

Adding signals (working) to a route will involve adding them to the ref file, and will usually involve adding them to the sigscr.dat and sigcfg.dat files. If you are not experienced in these files, work through a tutorial first, and then back the files up before you start playing - trust me, they are very unforgiving if you get something wrong!
Cheers

If you wish to copy the signals from my BM route, you will need to copy all of the signal gantry .s/.sd/.ace files as well as all of the signal entries from the .ref file.
On top of that, you will need the sigcfg.dat and sigscr.dat files from the route.
The sigcfg.dat file lists all of the .s files used
You should not need to edit those two files as long as you do not add any more signals to your route.

The bottom line is, never ever ask a question, because every question that can be asked has been asked and is in the RP archive waiting for you to search for it.

This route is available from the download section of http://www.train-sim.com. The file is called sydw151r.zip.
Below is the description for this route:
MSTS Route--SydWest Stage 1 release 5.1r. Based on real life CityRail passenger routes in western Sydney, NSW, Australia. This route covers the 40 km corridor from Seven Hills to Richmond. You must have the standard MSTS routes installed for this route to work. By Ben Johnson.

Why does everybody who asks a question here have to state this stupid disclaimer?
You will know when you have earned this label, I promise you

Ever since anyone who asked a question about an upcoming route, loco or piece of rolling stock automatically told that they were either " a gimme pig" or are more often told that the question has already been asked and to use search.
This seems to happen regardless if the person is a newbie or a long tme poster, so I can understand people being defensive whenever they wish to ask the unforgivable question about the status of an upcoming route.
My 2 cents
