People know you are Victorian when:

*You expect every train to run no more than 3 minutes late.
*You try to by train ticket at a local grocery shop or 7-11 or a petrol station
*You expect ticket machine to accept eftpos or credict card
*You expect your ticket to be valid on all type of public transports
*You expect to see LED indicators on board trains or automatic PA system tells you where train stops
*When train stops, you extend your hand try to find door handle or the push button to open the door, only to find out there is no such thing
*You expect every station to have rubbish bins
*You look for a validator on a tram
*You change your mind and wanting to get off elsewhere rather than the original destination you intended to go and only to find out your ticket can't get you out of the station...
*You expect your inter urban train to have some sort of buffet during meal time

Hey?..whatever happen to my warning level?

Yep. The Sydney system isn't as good as some people make out. They didn't even electrify until seven years after we had.

Sydney's biggest station has 25 platforms, with room for two more.
Melbourne's biggest station has only ____ platforms. Smile Very Happy Sad Smile

What would a station in Melbourne with more than 25 platforms do for city of Melbourne and the entire Victoria?

(BTW Central actually has 27 platforms)

16 for Flinders St. However 11, 15, and 16 don't exist anymore, 12, 13 and 14 don't see regular use.

Spencer St has 14, soon to be 16 with 2 extra platforms to be added during renovations

So you're admitting that you don't really know that much about Melbourne?

Melbourne has separate main stations for country and suburban. Spencer Street has eight platforms for the exclusive use of country trains (some long enough to be used as two platforms), and Flinders Street has about fourteen platform reqularly used* by suburban trains, so that is a total of at least 22 platforms, which, considering the relative sizes of N.S.W. and Vic. is pretty impressive. How many suburban platforms does Central have?

*-- Of these, four platforms (10, 12, 13, and 14) are only used by a handful of trains each day, but this does include scheduled use for at least three of those platforms (10, 12, and 14). Also, some see a lot more use during such times as the Royal Show.

Merely leaving space for others to contribute .... Smile Very Happy Surprised Smile
This forum seems to be (correct me if I am wrong) also a great place to ask questions when you do not know something.

I have never seen the platform arrangements at Flinders and Spencer Streets explained before in print as well as it has been done today in this forum.

Sydney Central has 8 above ground suburban platforms 16-23
2 underground platforms 24-25
and 2 unused underground platforms 26-27.

Maybe that's so when all your trains break down you've got places to park them and still enough room for replacements! Razz

Out of curiosity, how many suburbs/postcode areas per suburban station are there in Mebourne as opposed to Sydney?

That's an attention-getter!

Sydney (and New South Wales) has run out of postcode numbers and may have to borrow some from interstate or go to 5 digits. Quite a number of the newer suburbs share the same postcode number as a result.

The rest of "ninthnotch"'s question needs more reaearch.

You'd probably have to sit there with a Melways and work it out. It'd be different near the city of course.

I reckon they waste postcodes a bit. I've noticed that they're resorting to postcodes starting with 1 (and maybe 9?). It seems as though the post code changes every kilometre in some places, and makes you wonder why they just can't have each area slightly bigger. Maybe it helps with computerised sorting that I assume they would be employing now. Although I don't live a in a city, our postcode covers two towns, and a north-south distance of at least 20km, with probably 20000+ people in it. Although we can't be as bad as London, where they have six-digit letter/number combinations.

You're not wrong there in terms of wasting postcodes! Sydney University has it's own postcode!!!! Why???

My point exactly. Why can't they just adopt the postcode of the surrounding suburb? Surely it's not too difficult to write on the letter:

Professor Smith
Sydney University
<suburb> 2000

or similiar. Maybe it's because a machine sorts them and it's easier to send the whole lot at once. But that's stupid, because looking in the postcodes section right now:
Sydney South is 2000 and Sydney South PO Boxes is 1235
Sydney Domestic Airport is 2020 (honestly, there can't be that many people living at the airport)

or Victoria for example:
St Kilda 3182, St Kilda East 3183, St Kilda Rd PO Boxes 8001, St Kilda Rd Central PO Boxes 8008, St Kilda SOuth PO Boxes 3182, St Kilda West 3182.
How about I suggest an alternative: St Kilda anything should be 3182!
