Hiya folks. I'm going to Ballarat in the next few weeks for a spot of gunzelling. It's been a long time since I was up that way for trains, so I've forgotten any good locations up that way. I'm also looking to travel not too far north of Creswick and about the same distance east of Ballarat.

Does anyone have any suggestions for good photogenic locations? No overbridges or level crossings, please - I'm after something a bit different than the usual Smile

Early morning catching Melbourne bound trains out of Bacchus Marsh is an OK position. Just at the new alignment in Geelong - Bacchus Marsh Road. As the train comes from behind the cutting around the bend. Makes for quite a picturesque scene. Maybe a decent stop on your way through.

Cheers

On the new Bungaree line I got some photos a while back:
http://www.railgeelong.com/gallery/melbourne-ballarat/bungaree-deviation/

I assume because you said no overbridges or level crossings, you are going to take shots side on? The second new bridge on the deviation (nearest to Ballarat) can be just seen from the road to the north.

Up near Creswick you can get up to the top of Australasian Bank (?) but I can't remember the access point, I got directed there by another remember here.

Creswick Station provides an excellent spot. Trains heading North come into the station on a bend. Access is pretty good too. A road that leads to the local school allows access to the goods shed/town side of the yard. Smile

The Ballarat station is a good stop, almost anything will run to or through the station and it is on a slight curve and crossing also make a good light show at night. Only good during the night however too many people in the daytime.

A spot I like is opposite Ballarat East, on the old platform itself.

Watch it, though, V/Los can sneak up on you! Razz Laughing

Another spot I also like, but don't get to enough, is below the Warrenheip Road overpass, where the lines split, for West bound trains at least.

Other than that, have a drive around, there's plenty of good spots on the Ballarat line to take photos on! Very Happy

If any one give me the location of the rail bridge, that is made of the concrete pillars that wind turbines are usually mounted on, it would be much appreciatted.

Exactly where I was thinking. Very Happy

The shot from the level crossing is good, nice long, (relatively!) straight lines. I actually stand on the former platform to the left, perfect for shooting across to Ballarat East when there was more "stuff" there and taking trains coming and going on the main line, of course.

Nicely done, as always! Very Happy

That footbridge is quite handy when the TT at Ballarat East is being used as well. I remember it being packed (wobbling, creaking and groaning!) when the double Ks ran up there...

Linky to miniDV screencap rip of the double Ks at Ballarat East TT (with Melton, Bacchus Marsh also).
