To easy,

Here's my question:

Federal unit not yours

This might be stretching the "station or signal box" thing a bit, but...

State Mine  (nr. Wonthaggi)
  duttonbay Minister for Railways

This might be stretching the "station or signal box" thing a bit, but...

State Mine  (nr. Wonthaggi)
"John of Melbourne"

State Mine is correct.  I didn't think that anything was being stretched - in 1965 or so I spent an enjoyable hour in the signal box there after riding in the cab of a J class on the roadside goods.

I didn't realise that there was a State Mine signal box.  That's fair enough then.

My question...

Love a good cryptic conundrum.
Off the top of my head, I can only think of:

Quambatook
John of Melbourne The Ghost of George Stephenson

Location: Melbourne suburbs
No to Quambatook (and could you explain how you thought it fitted?).

Please bear with me as it is after 1 in the morning!!

Tried to think of stations and the clue, and could only come up with an entertainer [comedian] named Rod Quontook[/b:b2fe3e4da5] and thought Quambatook fitted in nicely ShockedConfusedShocked

Dawson?
John of Melbourne The Ghost of George Stephenson

Location: Melbourne suburbs
No, not Dawson (whoever that represents).

The entertainer concerned was quite popular about 60 years ago. (And no, I don't remember him; I'm not that old. But I've read about him.)

If I am permitted another go..
60 years ago, and east, hmm, the only thing I can come up with is somewhere in Dame Nellie territory:
Yarra Glen[/b:e259924ea8]
John of Melbourne The Ghost of George Stephenson

Location: Melbourne suburbs
No, not Yarra Glen.

Sometimes I think that there is a very fine line between too easy and too hard.

I'll give one more clue and then the point will go to me because nobody got a correct answer (if nobody does after this clue).

The entertainer's first name was Roy (but Roy is not part of the answer).

I guess you mean Roy Rene, who used the named Mo McCacky when performing. In which case I might guess Moe[/b:c24ca1f5d2]

Which also goes hand in hand with one of the 3 stooges!

Maybe stretching it a bit but what about Tantanoola as almond is a tan colour and tan is repeated in the name (round and round)......worth a shot
  duttonbay Minister for Railways

Tantanoolais not in Victoria, so how could it be correct  Wink

Dalmore
  duttonbay Minister for Railways

Not Dalmore, but I am interested in how you came up with that answer.  Perhaps there might be a hint in the method you used...
