Hey,
I commenced work on 'Maybe Never Railway' this week, and am planning to spend a bit of money in the next few months getting it to operational standard. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good hobby shop in Sydney where I would be able to get after-sale help if required.
I've had a series of bad experiences with one particular well established and well respected (not by me anymore!) shop, and I'm not sure how good Tom's would be with the after-sales service (although I wouldn't hesitate shopping there). Other than these I haven't had much experience!

Should I assume that there are no hobby shops in Sydney worth recommending??

In my past experience, I have found Berg's in Parramatta and Casula hobbies very helpful in solving any problems that I would have. Tom's on the other hand I just buy the stuff that I need and go.

Also add to that list, Woodpecker Models at Pendle Hill. They mainly sell British trains but also have plenty of second hand stuff.

Thanks fellas,
It is Berg's that I have had trouble with. The staff haven't seemed bothered to serve me the 5 or 6 times I have been in there this year (they weren't serving other customers either).
I just got home from Woodpecker at Pendle Hill, nice shop, nice service, pity there isn't more Australian stuff, but some of the second hand items look interesting! I'll have to visit Casula next week.

Geez mate, they jump on me as soon as I walk in the doorway. "Yes sir, can I help you sir?". Scare the living thingy gumeys out of me!! Very unusual to be ignored in Berg's.

I have had that experience at Bergs they were too keen to serve me. At Toms they always look as if they cant get you out of there too quickly, although my wife gets good service when she goes. Maybe I should show a bit of cleavage!
Train Trader at Pymble although mostly European are very friendly and helpful.
Does anyone know about model railroad craftsman??

My one and only visit there was interesting, good servce, friendly manner,
interesting stock ( I went there to see NCE ) - the interesting part was the long walk to and from the railway station and the rain.
Check his opening times - he is open only a few days.
Also has a good mail order - I'm satisfied. what do you want from the shop, a look around, or specifics ? Check out his web site.

Been to Toms, but umm....attitude of "hurry up buy something, so we can serve other customers, bit 'dark ' in this shop.

i have been to many shops over the years, and this is the best one by far. as i have a british based model railway, this is the only shop i will go to. the people are freindly and there is stuff jammed into every nook and cranny. i walked in their once, they had just opened, and i couldn't get away from the joint. they are very helpfull too. they know their stuff. some things are expensive cause they have to be delivered from the uk, but everything that i have bought from that shop has been excelent, never had a problem with anything. everything bought from their was worth every cent.
highly reccomended shop.
regards,
alex

The Train Trader is on the Pacific highway in the shops running south from the railway station. They are down the end about 5min from the Station.
I had a really good experience with Woodpecker in Jan. I visited them for the first time in 4 years (my wife was shopping at DeBras in the next suburb so I drove over while she shopped). They were really good, very friendly and as we were chatting about DCC I was given a CD with heaps of useful information on the Lenz system. I will certainly make the effort to visit more.

Casula- Great shop, good for kits/decals and some NSW 2nd hand models. have been offered coffee and a chat many a time in there
Bergs-2nd hand models ok, but watch the prices. Bergs kits really good but really expensive. Service bad, is becoming REALLY R/C biased.
HobbyCo- OK, has big range of stuff, but more bargins to be found at other shops.
Woodpecker- Friendly, but British biased. Good for some cheap 2nd hand mods
Toms- Cheapest you will find for most things. Huge range for Brass/RTR locos.
Asquith(Hornsby)- Huge range of 2nd hand models. Range bigger than the shop, but it still gets pushed inside somehow.
