What is so bad about Keilor Plains? I've never been off there but it looks nice, new, clean & colourful.

Clean is about the only thing going for it, and that will change over time.

For me...

Best looking: Malvern to South Yarra, Parliament, Melbourne Central, Spencer Street, Brighton Beach, Sandringham, Windsor, Hawthorn.

I too think that the MATHS stations - Malvern, Armadale, Toorak, Hawksburn, and South yarra are something special - and good spots for observing all manner of city, country, and freight trains.

Brighton Beach is lovely, too, with a pleasant vista over the Bay.

And like Deblaz and ShaunDXB, I like Windsor.

Jacana deserves hating, but at least you can see some things from South Kensington.

What of Macaulay, in perpetual darkness under the Freeway ? on one side is the restored Moonee Ponds Creek, but on the other you have the backs of warehouses, with the goods tracks ripped up. At least you never get rained on on the platform. Wink

I don't know if you can say Bacchus Marsh is suburban but its one nice station, complete with signal box, semaphore signals , goodshed and turntable. Otherwise I'd say Melton has a pretty nice station also Smile

It's an oldish sort of brick station - does any know when it was built? It has a nice view over the bay. All the Sandringham trains come in on platform 3 (ugly), while all citybound trains are on the island platform (plat 2).

Platform 1 isn't used for anything other than removing M> logos from Comengs.

For me, the ugliest stations would have to be those built as "afterthoughts".

I'd say Kananook and the one on the Cranbourne line on Thompson's road (sorry, name not to hand -- Darling perhaps??) would have to be high contenders.

These were (apparently) both stations built onto the line as an "afterthought" because someone said "hey, we need an extra station here to seve the population growth in that area".

As a result, they are crammed into a space never envisioned to hold a station, and therefore are just an ugly kludge. They're usually no more than a strip of ashphalt or concrete with a few seats and some cyclone fencing thrown down. Kananook has some sort of 60's/70's glass and steel arty effort which just looks butt ugly.

At least at Kananook you have a really good perdestrian overpass (ostensibly for crossing the freeway which runs parallel to the station, but also crosses the tracks); great for aerial photography work.

I thought Kananook was some sort of Fibro structure?

I am a fan of the City Loop stations (i.e Flagstaff, Melb Central and Parliament). I always feel quite safe when catching the train at these stations. They are also very clean and well lit.

As for the worst, well Box Hill. There is graffiti everywhere, bird poo galore and there is generally just a bad feeling about the place. In addition, the whole station is poorly lit making it very gloomy. Oh and one more thing, it is quite cold down there.

Platform 1 used to see many services years ago. Sandringham Line had a high frequency of trains and many of them originated at Brighton Beach.

Occasionally trains will terminate into platform 1 during late running, or trackwork.

Brighton Beach is definately the nicest station on the whole suburban network.

I just saw the pictures of Keilor Plains.......Platform 2 doesn't look too bad at all.......Maybe it's the sunny day that makes it look good.

Yah know what.........somehow I picture the station being enclosed in a toob thing like the one on the Tulla just past Flemington Road.......put in the toob, build in the facilities that allow both stations to be manned, and you got yourself a nice station Wink

What's so good about Chatham? I use that station a lot as my church is nearby....and I find it very scary indeed. Platform 3 is simply horrendous, and the tunnel that leads up to the island platforms......well that's just scary. Especially at night. Entering the station from the south side via the carpark behind those office/shops.......the path drops down sharply, with trees on both sides........EEEEK! Chatham would be one of my WORST stations!

Funny enough I thought about that as well. New cragieburn Stations should have soemthing like that.

With KP ist not that it looks that bad, its just that is looks so obviously cheap. Its just metal struts holding up slabs of concrete and it looks almost temporary. Looking at it from the nearby housing estate it actually look very nice and seeing trains pull in looks really odd, but people are lucky to be a walk away from the station.

Really the only thing I hate about it is the lack of shelter, because believe me you can get soaked if you have to wait there for 20 minutes.
