I would like to know what freight activity there is in Canberra and what times they run?

I remember a fuel/ oil train when I was there a few years ago but is that all there is?

AFAIK thats the only freighter that goes into Canberra itself, but a bit further north you can catch the garbage train between Crisp's Creek and Sydney.

There is a daily oil down in Canberra, usually operated by Pac Nat X class.Arrives In the morning and Leaves at night, so it is there during the day, as far as i can remember (Sorry, can't help with the Exact times but they have been posted before). Otherwise there is two return Xplorer's (Each day is different) and on thurs/Fri there is an Xplorer stabled at just at the end of the station.

Thanks guys,

as I will only be in Canberra with no transport of my own the oily in the yard will have to do.

Also what days is the railway museum open & what times & cost?

Is it worth a visit?

Check out their website, it lists most of the stuff they have there- www.arhsact.org.au
If you're a fan of the 73 class you'll be right!

Re: Canberra oiler

Runs UP Tue, THu, Sat, leaves Canberra Station at approx 1715hrs, usual consist between 13 & 20 NTAF.

Usual noisy end of late has been double X's, but you also see ELs, and today, GL104 was second unit. B80 (Murraylander) was on the run for a while anout six months ago. Think one of the XR rebuilds was on it once.

Beware entering the yard at Canberra Station- some of the shunters are Nazi's.

Drivers exchange staff at Queanbeyan & Bungendore Stations, good viewing along King's Hwy between Qbeyan & B'dore, just about all on banks- good growling.

However, if you are going to travel all the way here just for gunzelling, that's it for freight- it's a narcoleptic line. However, Goondah, between Bowning & Binalong, about an hour from Canberra, heading out Barton Hwy, is lovely, except for lack of shade.

Cheers

As far as I am aware, only one of the XR's is currently on SG, XR555. I am not aware of it going north of Albury yet. It has been on 9691/9692 to Wodonga at least once but as a second unit. It spends most of tis time out on the western SG.
