Looks good. Lucky Peter Vincent isn't here to see you call it an I "wagon". It's an "I truck" thankyouverymuch. :)

Well all the 30 years I was in the S.A. railways, "Hands on" yes we did call them trucks,,,,,

BUT....... at time time when talking specifically about "a truck", it was often called a wagon.

An example:- There was 50 trucks on the train and amoungst them was an open wagon with no tarp on it. So both usages are right. Just your own terminology you wish to use. "Means the same in railway use" same as passenger car, or passenger coach.

Looks very good James.
I had to smile as I noted you have even put what looks like a dilapidated Victorian wagon label that would fit under the flat spring loaded label holder and these labels were always hard to read after a few days especially if it had been raining. At times these dilapidated labels were a right shunter's nightmare and time waster especially if you were pushed for time. Wink When these thin type cardboard labels got wet during transit and a little weathered and when they dried out they would look like bits of curled up paper, just like you got in your updated IA 13132 wagon. EXCELLENT.

Also looks like you even got the Tarpaulin arm as well. Great eye for detail. I'm impressed. I can vaguely remember these type wagons, or something like them. (OTD, old timer's disease) The door locking device was it the same setup as the GY's. Bugger of things they were as they got a bit of wear and tear.

In the early 70's (good ol days Laughing ) we would get an odd one for the freight shed with dry goods in them. Mentioning GYs we would get huge train loads of GY's with Super-phosphate from Portland into Mount Gambier for all the various stations all over the South East of South Australia. Was a right nightmare at times to re-marshall all these GY's into station order. Anyway getting off the subject here a bit, the IA is looking good James.

This morning I was looking through Railpage Australia™'s pictures, did not realise they were there and came across this one.
An IA, this one has rivets in it... Would this be an early version IA. I see it was built in 1902. I vaguely remember seeing one of these come into the Mount around 1970.

That's one of the "Tommy Bent" I wagons. I think they are older than the I wagon that I'm doing.

According to Railpage Australia™ photo this IA was built in December 1902.
Autocoupled in July 1935.
Taken out of service in June 1972.

They look different, but maybe they had extra plate and rivets as you can see around the bottom when rusted out.

What is meant by a "Tommy Bent" wagon.

James, do you know when your I's or IA's came into service, or were they a re-fitted old wagons. Just curious.

"Tommy Bent" is just a nickname for that style of I wagon

HD193 at Maldon was originally built as I14813 in 1916 at Newport Workshops. These were the more common variety.

BTW, there is absolutely no difference between the I and IA wagons except for the lettering. The IA class was introduced when the older low capacity IB wagons were scrapped. This was a concession to farmers who complained about having to order and pay for higher capacity wagons than what they really needed. That's why there's the dual load rating of Load 11/16½ Tons for these wagons. If I understand the system correctly, the farmers only had to pay for 11 tons instead of 16½ tons if the load was less than 11 tons. I could be wrong about this though.

I thought it was, but it may have had a special reason for that name.

Your right. If a wagon is not to capacity it was called LCL (Less Than Carload) and was charged at a much higher rate. If a farmer had only a small load, then better to use a small load truck. Sheep and Cattle vans were same, one animal would cost more per head than a truck load per head. Idea was to have trucks a full as possible (better railways) which was cheaper for farmers. Most farmers 11 tons of super or bagged wheat or wool this 11 ton truck would have been ideal. I can see reason for the two 11/16½ tons for back in those early days these would have been ideal.

Thanks James.

Nice work james looks real authentic.

Those were the days eh john with the 4 wheelers on the datmoor trestle.
Remember when the t class hit the glue truck and the crew got covered in glue Smile Smile Smile Smile
That would have to be one of the funniest memories of the mount running.
I think Neville Hayes was on that wasn't he.
There would be a fair surface area to glue him to the seat.

cheers
ian
