Recently I came across a photo of two X200s working a ballast train. Can the X200s work in multiple?

While we're on the subject, when was the last time an X200 worked a passenger train? I know they used work haul employee trains to railway workshops at least into the late 70s.

Cheers
David

Hey I looked at that and thought it said X2000s... That would be a sight to see on a ballast train.

Hah same, though an X2000 hauled ballast train would be the fastest train in australia Wink

As far as i know X200's were made puerly for shunting and don't have facilities to run in multiple. The last pass i know of was run by a museum in the late eighties and ran all over the Sydney goods lines.

Yes! I was on that one! I remember the tour started from Redfern Platform 1 and set off for the Darling Harbour and out to Canterbury sidings (wow this was a long time ago!). During the afternoon it also climbed up the Engine Dive.

My uncle went for a trip with one of his train drivers mates all over the goods lines in X203 by itself!!! in 1980s.They can run in multiple but with a driver in each loco because they have no MU cables. Also only the X200s can run on the mainlines because they have a train brakes but the smaller X100s cant.

Thanks 4464, I forgot to mention that they can run like multipull steam locos (each loco manned). As far as i know you require a Rover Mech (exemption form for opperating rules) nowdays to run a X200 on the main line. Razz

That would be a TOC waiver. It would only be because none are listed in the TOC (train operating conditions) manual for main line work, if any are listed at all.

albert3801-What are X210s? Confused

I dont think any will be running on the main line anymore anyway.
CRTs X209/216 only stick to their yard(when they are working).
Interails X117 only sticks to the casino yard.
PacNats X107 at Albury hasnt moved in ages
RICs Xt106i only shunts when it wants to in chullora DEMC.

No reason for X200s to go on the mainline

They are a different type of rail tractor - similar but longer on one end than the X200. Can't find any pics on line at the moment.

They aren't a separate class, they later ones are just a slightly different design. X201-X206 have Hercules 6-DFXH-F engines are are styled like Sentinel shunters of the era. X207-X218 are more angular and have Cummins NHRS-6-BI engines.

They are all collectively called the X200 class, just like the assorted collection of small tank engines and steam cranes were collectively called the X10 class.
