http://www.cit.uws.edu.au/~dsharoo/3dt_sdk.jpg
The 3DT SDK is good to work with.
Note that the nameboard is affixed at top, and can probably be moved since the gmax source is avalible. The side skirts already have some transparency but should be able to be alpha'd out as 3DT have proper sort order for objects. I tried alpha'ing out the side skirts on the VIA cars but they only are transparent side on not from a 3/4 view, I might try the same with these cars.
Also if you plaster the nameboard on the side as per prototype it gets overstretched as they are using only a small sample for the car sides which is both great as it makes stainless easy to do (Ive tried the aurora cars previously) but complicates things if need nameboards as per protoype.
Also the texture filtering does not change (it should) when I change the filer modes which is a shame.
Having mentioned these issues, I am pleased at how the cars came out for a 5 min re skin job, and since there are 3 variations of the same car thanks to 3DT implementing FreightAnim() the size of all 3 cars combinded is tiny and I will be keeping these in my trainset
I am aware of where the nameboards should be as on the prototype overland cars, I think i will replace the current nameboard with proper overland art deco font and leave it as is.
I was too lazy to install the VP van so I used a VLCX.
Thanks for the S James.
EDIT: Any constructive comments on improving these cars without modifiying the mesh or textures severly are welcome.

Dominic
dont bother with trying to get rid of the skirts on the sides of the cars. The original sleeping and sitting cars both had skirts, and it wasn't until the mid 60's that they were removed. If someone wants them removed. Let them remove them by themselves. As the names were different on each side could I suggest that the person who downloads the model can fit them themselves also.
Also one last thing. The end windows on the cars were "white" actually opaque, but is there anyway of changing the transparencies of the windows to "blank out" those windows?.
If you need anyhelp please pm me.

Blanking out windows is no problem ie toliet windows
This is what i meant re the side skirts
http://www.nitroware.net/msts/side_skirt.jpg
The technolgy behind these cars allows name customisation eg one car many variations but I am not intrested in this at the moment. Anyone who wants can get the SDK which has the gmax files in it and do that, since its free.
At least we now know they they resemble the cars fairly well.
I would like the proper "THE OVERLAND" nameboard though, I used to have an art deco font but I cant find it.
Ill fix the textures a little and then send them out to a few people.
Oh I forgot to mention, size wise the cars are good too, same size as the VLCX .

Check this out
broadway.ttf (comes with ms publisher)
I think the VR used the same on their steel cars ?
The R is different but the chisel lines can be done with photo editor
http://www.cit.uws.edu.au/~dsharoo/font.jpg
Now one can easily do art deco lettering.
I was able to get rid of the side skirts, also blanked out all the nameboards to see how it would look

KngtRider & all.
Russell Beer (mrdriverau) has been making overland cars for the last few months now - after a few final touches they were sent to train-sim.com last night. They should be ready to download sometime soon.
Here are some screenshots:
Not trying to put you off KngtRider, just thought I'd let you know the situation with these cars (they've already been built-released).
Cheers,
Matt Julian

I have been made aware that they were being made by those mentioned, thanks.
Its no problem at all. I just did it to pass the time.
Now to sit back and watch all the gimme's go hyperactive over the overland set.
I think I should get back to finishing my Aurora Sleeper and PHN

Did some more testing of them
http://day.uws.edu.au/~99080046/msts/snorer_sun.jpg
(texture filter in S is set to linear)
It looks crap with mipmapping, looks crap without mipmapping, like i said before unpainted stainless steel does not go well into the game.
Gaeten's VIA cars have two pieces for the car sides, if it was one piece it would have been much better.

I am talking about my skins, not the good overland cars.
Well, crap being a choice between heavy moire or heavy blending. If you have any suggestions I would love to hear it !
(Then again its probably my gfx card as usual...)
eg the roof can be reset back to its original state without the elaborate fluting but the cars have those everywhere ...
I dont know if you can see in that shot but all the 'green' windows have alpha'd blinds on them.
Maybe scans of a LIMA sleeper would be better than photoreal/mixed photoreal+painted
