It's a matter of personal preference. Some people like to just get there and then have a nice holiday; others like the holiday to start when they board the train. GSR are aiming at the latter.

What Ghan, mate? They cut it off! That's "the service" that you are talking about? Make passengers to change at as many places as possible...

Think they are ready to get licence for touristic railway which carry pensioners only.

I note that the Ozback Explorer mentioned earlier in this thread is a South African venture. Does anybody know if they are affilated with the "Shongololo Express" in that country? The concepts are very similar as are the two web sites.

When I was talking with the people at the State Mine Heritage Park, they mentioned that Ozback had 'done this sort of thing' in South Africa...

That's an attention-getter!

Here is the anwser to the question... they are a private company not a government department . There goal is to make profit to cover their costs and as the price of living goes up everything else does too. There it is pure and simple although i personally i cant afford to much travel at those prices but i am only 1 drop of water in a very big ocean. The trains ( well maybe not the Overland so much) has been leveled at tourists overseas as well as at home. So in a way they have come full circle to what they were ( ships of the desert).

If i have pronounced the above wrong you know what i mean.

If they are a private concern and they are running the interstate service as a cruise ship, not as an interstate service, is it appropriate that they be subsidised by the SA and VIC governments as they were until recently?

I would rather see any subsidy go towards a rail service aimed at rail fans and ordinary people rather than subsidise overseas tourists.

cheers Peter

There simply isn't enough of a railfan market in Australia to do that sort of thing. In the UK or USA, perhaps. But not here.
