I cna make out a train's general noise over a lot of background noise/music - well I used to until nutcase bank customers yelling over their dumb mistakes destroyed my hearing...But I can still pick an EMD loco a mile away

That's an attention-getter!

Not bad Smile I'm very close to a major freight line (as in intercapital). Quite often, at night one can hear T's and X's screaming their guts out in notch-8 as they're taking off out of a nearby loop. I can also hear horizontal lifts, diesels and the occasional steam from an adjacent line. With this line I get the added bonus of it being on a constant 1:40 or 1:50 grade for a good few kilometres. On a good still morning, you can hear the steamers for about 5 minutes from outside. On a perfectly still night you can even hear horizontal lifts for that amount of time.

(Not so normal) -M

Hi all,

I think I come out with a rather locigal solution, majority of the time people like train is maily because there is a big intake of new trains. While looking at 3801, or R711 ramble through the suburban might also attract new fans, but from what I see the messages in newsgroups and this forum, new trains has alot to do with attract new fans.

Come to think of it, near the year I was born there was a huge new trains in take . Compare with the age of some of the members here, you can basically divide into Tangara age, Comeng age, 81 class age, NR age, QR- EMU age. etc.

My interest in trains came at a very young age, before I could even speak. Although no one in my family were involved with trains, the moment they noticed I had a 'thing' for them, they seemingly encouraged it even further by taking me out to the station and watching the trains, or getting every Thomas the Tank Engine video/merchandise avaliable.

What I always loved about trains was standing at the platform either at St Marys or Werrington, and having a high-speed intercity V-SET run past you at the highest running speed. The same with a freight train, the heavy feeling and vibrating you'd feel on the platform when 4x82 class locomotives with 45 loaded coal wagons speed past you.

My interest in steam began when I was at a younger age. At Cabramatta one night, 3801 came chuffing through. The scene of the smoke and the 3801's headlights and cab lights diffusing off the smoke....was a sight I'll never forget. Though my interest in steam was passive for many years to come, it eventually 'sparked' when I cab rode a Zig Zag Railway locomotive on my 15th birthday last year. The experience of the locomotive as it climbed Top Road, the sounds of the locomotive from the outside, the smell of the coal and water in the cab, and the overall feeling of the locomotive's power at work, was that spark which made me finally take action and join the Zig Zag Railway.

As with 3801 Limited, this came a year later. I confess, viewing the film "A Steam Train Passes" several times was probably my main influnce in joining them Very Happy

I slightly disagree with James with regards to being interested in trains that came out when we did. At 16years of age, I'm involved a fair bit with heritage railways, such as Zig Zag, 3801 Limited and formerly Historic Electric Traction. Steam trains and old electric trains I'm talking about here. New Millennium Trains and private operated locomotives are only a sideline to my interest.

I'm confident that any gunzel my age would nowerdays be die-hard diesel locomotive buffs, with Motive Power as their bible, and very few would be captivated by the trains of their past.

Another reason why I'm involved in heritage railways, is because at my age, I have had jack-all experience in seeing what the glory of the past railways were like. This is an example for my past involvement with Historic Electric Traction. I've never ever seen a single-decker suburban/interurban in operation, so that's why I joined....to experience something I've never had the chance.

I feel all young enthusiasts should give in some of their time and effort to heritage railways. Sure, photographing and gunzelling them is the main part of our hobby, but they'd get a whole lot more in helping out to make it happen. I'm currently in that phase where I'm growing out of being a photographer, and being more involved in what I like to photograph.

As for being near a railway line, I currently attend St Marys Senior High School, located adjacent to the main western railway line. I have many accounts, which I will share later.

My father was into it, and came from Newcastle - and liked rail like half of Newcastle probably did.

All I heard about when I was young was the Flyer, the Gully line, the 38s, the Garratts, Maitland, the Morpeth branch, Cessnock and so on. We lived nowhere near Newcastle but obviously it was part of the culture there. Confused

But I did manage endless rides with rellies to Lithgow, Gosford on the interurbans, Kiama on the Budds, National Park (just for the run) and so on.

Went through a photographing stage but now only interested in 2 things: rail politics, and steam locomotion. The latter is emotional - and I have no trouble justifying to my non-rail friends that standing up the front next to R711 - hissing and steaming, the noises and smell, makes it all worthwhile.

I know, I got my intrest in rail, having stood as with Mum at Woodville Station (when it still had its wooden signal cabin) waiting for dad to return from work on a redhen set.

I've heard the statement "Bloody STA" from mum and dad many times, especially when my brother gets in on the act and begins rattling off the numbers of the locos sitting at the Dry Creek MPC as we cross the overpass.

I've been potographing the preserved steam locomotives of Steamranger ever since I've been able to hold a camera. I remember at the age of 5 being taken to Dry Creek to watch the mighty steam giant 520 being prepared before her next outing to Victor Harbour. The sight and smell of 621 steaming away with a train of 700 and 600 class steel cars always will hold a place in my heart....sniff I can almost smell the smoke! Its definatley an emotional thing, especially when it comes to steam, but then the age old ALCo's of the SAR (AN by the time I was born) and clyde built bulldogs will also always be held special to me.

We can hear the endless procession of north bound frieghts every night from our home, and we can proudly say we can pick out the sound of a freight train from inside our local shopping centre. Its great when you can constantly be payed out by your non-rail friends when you can tell them the class and loco number simply by the sound of its horn or throb of its engine.

Perhaps Dad over encouraged me , introducing me to the world of model railways, to the point where I have already built a 500B class 4-8-4 which takes pride of place at the head of my Overland consist.

I wouldn't have it any other way. Being a gunzel is normal, no matter what others say. Who said we were different. Isn't it those other non-rail enthusiasts that are different?
