Hi all,

I think I come out with a rather locigal solution, majority of the time people like train is maily because there is a big intake of new trains. While looking at 3801, or R711 ramble through the suburban might also attract new fans, but from what I see the messages in newsgroups and this forum, new trains has alot to do with attract new fans.

Come to think of it, near the year I was born there was a huge new trains in take . Compare with the age of some of the members here, you can basically divide into Tangara age, Comeng age, 81 class age, NR age, QR- EMU age. etc.

Hey?..whatever happen to my warning level?

The last time this got raised, there was a slight flamewar... Embarassed

It would also be in some cases 'hereditary' - if one's father likes trains and takes their son on holidays where every oppourtunity they get they cart their child trackside... That's also how it happens...

That's an attention-getter!

That may be a significant factor in getting some people interested in the first place, but I reckon that there would have to be more than that to keep them interested.

There sure is, it is a thing called "gets into your blood"
We are all different beings, (thank God) and the way we see or perceive things differently. It could start by looking at a picture of a train and it impresses you for some "unknown" reason. Or you see a movie, or as said your Dad took you on a train outing. OR your parents stopped at a rail crossing and you saw a steamer or modern diesel or whatever go past and you were highly impressed. You do not need to see trains every moment, to like trains. Most times it is just something that highly impresses you along life's track.

As for myself, my father was a Station Master on country stations from day I was born (1941) and as kids we lived in the station yard in the SM's residence and when I was old enough, I work most of my life in Railways "hands on" not the "clerical side" like my father did. Working with trains themselves was my poison. (now retired) My next youngest brother got into the Per Way maintenance, next brother "joined the Navy" and youngest brother a "Policeman" but there again my Grandfather was a Policeman. So obviously my youngest brother was impressed by my Grandfather. With Trains this is the same, for some reason you get impressed and it sticks.

I remember young lads and old lads Laughing young at heart) would approach me at work and we would have lengthy talk about railways (I always enjoyed that) and at times got them short rides in engine cabs and other things etc, only to see them a year or two later with cameras and Sound recordings with them, (made my day) saying, "thanks to you, I got hooked into this and started me off with that cab ride or whatever".

So you cannot put it down to just one or two things, it is just that for you personally something was highly impressed on you and it just gets into your blood, so to speak, and your hooked, or addicted in different ways. Reason why nearly all of us like certain engines or whatever, it is whatever takes your fancy and most times you ask yourself WHY? and you do not know WHY?

Also GOOD reason to always remember we ALL see trains differently and MUST always "respect" how the other person views trains, as we are ALL different with different "points of view". We just got to try and see the other persons point of view and where he or she is coming from, then we enjoy trains far better, but that goes for all things in life.

As I was bought up with trains from day one, but this viewpoint was maybe different for me as I always saw railways from the INSIDE, looking out, but railfans see railways from the OUTSIDE, looking in. Two very different points of view as I have found out and come to realized in my now latter years.

I'm of the age when the last Hitachis were settling in and the first Comengs were just arriving.

For aviation buffs, I was born the same day as the Boeing 767 was rolled out. (That made my first 767 ride something special!) I haven't found anything significant in railways that happened the same day though.

My dad got interested in railways from his dad (ie: my grandfather). I got hooked after my dad took me to puffing billy in 1984 when I was about 3 yrs old. Shocked Now look what's happened to me! I may have been a "normal" person if he hadn't done that... Wink

As for me grand dad and dad are all biologists. Thank god they didn't pass that on me Razz (I used to doze off whenever they talk about animals and plants...)

Another factor, you tend to like trains if you live close by a railway station or rail line with reasonable frequent trains pass by.

I couldn't help it... so that would be August 4 1981?

(sorry about the misquote James - I'm not sure how your name got in there seeing as I just clicked the quote button)

Michael, I was going to ask, "you did not tell us the date the Boeing 767 was rolled out",
BUT.... Opps, all was revealed and saved me looking it up somewhere.

Ah Ha,,,,, now I know.
It is nice to know the age of the rail buffs here. Adds to the interest, well for me at 62 it does. Gives a little better insight of the regulars here.

That sure does, as for me here now, no mainline trains anymore, so when I hear the Limestone Coast Railways Redhen heading off to Penola or Millicent and she blows her horn as she heads out the Mount. Very Happy It counts.

Right now that's even been taken away from us Crying or Very sad with all this stupid rip-off Insurance nonesense going on here in S.A. Mad

But you still got hooked on trains by other means. Wink
Being close to a railway does help to fire up the imagination though.
