I read in Newsrail about the ASR/AWR/ANR merger into ARG; it also said a loco renumbering operation would happen. Has this started? What sort of numbers will they be?

Betcha they won't - too many.
With the locos there's three separate systems - the old SAR system of three-digit numbers; the CR/ANR two-letter class names; and the WA single letter stuff with widely varying ranges of numbers. Plus the four-digit numbers for the Aust Northern 22 and 31 class locos, which is my guesstimate that they'll standardise on.

That sounds interesting - based on HP like QR did. That would tie in with the 22 and 31 too.
I just hope they don't run out of number ranges like QR did with their 2400hp 1550s.
Happy Gunzelling and remember, "Go by rail!"

It looks like the AWR DB class will become the 23 class as a recently overhauled DB class has been renumbered 2313 and named Iron Duke (which suggests it's heading to Whyalla for ore train duties).

the newest copy of NRM/ARHS Catchpoint has some details of a few renumberings.
it looks as though there will be a class letter(ALPHA) as well . The order for 4 GM/EMD Locos of 4000HP from EDI is for an FQ class. these are for the Northern Territory line.
Waggons wont be getting renumbered nor reclassed.
If you dont like all trains, no matter where from

I think the DE one is right. If I remember correctly, a recently overhauled DE (on standard guage) has been renumbered in the 1300 series.

So, in effect ASR, AWR & ANR couldn't merge because they're all the same thing, like CountryLink and CityRail couldn't merge because they're both part of SRA of NSW.

Alternately, number these diesel locomotives 61, 62, 63 class, following on from the NSW 60 class.

Yes, but with the 3 running as three separate divisions of ARG, these 3 divisions could be merged into the one division that trades under the name ARG.

From what I have read (Feb 2003 Railway Digest), these "FQ" class aren't actually being run/owned by ARG per-say.. even though ARG is one of the companies that owns APT, who EDI has signed the contract with.
APT's subsidiary "FreightLink" will run trains on the Alice-Darwin rail link.

The impression i get is the new loco numbers seem to be related to their
horsepower.
eg 31's = 3000 horsepower, number 100 series etc
22's = 2000 horsepower, number 200 series etc
Therefore exDB1593 is now 2313. 2000 horsepower, number 300 series.

The FQ class will be run by the 'new' operator Freightlink and two of the FQ's will be in aboriginal livery.
