What planned service extensions for rail announced by the Bracks government have actually been approved or even started?
IIRC, there's:
the extension to the Broadmeadows spark servces
Extension of sparks and track to South Morang
Dear Park extension?
South Cranbourne???

Greg, I think you will find that it will be some time before any further work is done on the Deer Park line. Also, I believe South Morang is actually in the process of being reviewed and I would expect we should hear something on this soon. The housing growth out in the North East direction from Melbourne would certainly provide a compelling case.

Based on info on DOI website and labor Party Transport Policy posted at last election this is the position.
RAIL:
- St.Albans - Sydenham electrification completed 01/02
- Broadmeadows - Craigieburn electrification funded for completion by 2005 with intermediate station at Roxburgh Park..
- Epping - South Morang electrification design work being prepared.
- Cranbourne - East Cranbourne electrification . Not proceeding at the moment, does not stack up financially yet. But new station going in on existing Cranbourne Line at Lyndhurst.
There are no plans at this time to electrify out to Deer Park or Deer Park West or beyond Sydenham.
Middleborough Road on Ringwood to be grade separated.
Extra track capacity options to be developed for Ringwwod - Box Hill, and Caulfield - Dandenong. Also duplication to be considered for Greensborough - Eltham.
Melbourne - South Geelong interurban service to be extended to new terminal station at GROVEDALE by early 2004.
TRAM:
- Mont Albert - Box Hill funded and nearly complete
- East Burwood - Vermont South funded for completion 2005
- Port Melbourne - Station Pier extension await funding but rails installed on pier.

G'day, first post, I don't know why I didn't register on this forum earlier
Anyhow re: South Morang.
Look out over the next few months for a new "urban" development to be announced / released. It's basically NOT going to be like your "average sprawly suburb" - higher density etc etc, it'll almost FORCE the government to extend to South Morang in the near future.
And there's overall Melbourne Metro Strategy which calls for higher-density dwellings (apartments etc) nearer to rail lines.
The Melbourne Metro 2030 Strategy combines two keen interests of mine, P.T. and Skyscrapers / developments.... there's so much info to disect from it, and I haven't even gone through most!
cheers

What they need in the future are Intercity Electric Trains which would run to Grovedale, Bacchus Marsh, Sunbury, Warragul (Very Unlikely), and Stony Point.

Grovedale is past Geelong isn't it? The government is currently deciding if the project is actually viable or not. If the line was to be reopened to Whittlesea they would have to electrify it. South Morang is a good decision. When I drive to Seymour I always drive through South Morang. There are signs everywhere saying Melbourne's best undiscovered secret, houses going up here and there. Firstly it can't be undiscoved because it's been there since the dawn of time. Secondly it's no secret because they have given it away.
Cheers,
Nick

Grovedale is currently the southernmost suburb of Geelong, there is no station there, however Labor Government is opening one soon.

An extension of tram Route 3 from East Malvern to Chadstone via East Malvern Station would be nice. And also converting the route to B2's as there would probably be more patronage.
Route 8 is short and could be extended along Toorak Road, however having 3 tram level crossings on the Glen Waverley Line wouldn't be good.

Having just spent the weekend at RedHill (VIC) at a wedding, where was the old railway station termnus?
Also, I would add Mornington and Redhill to that list. The peninsula is gaining pace and it won't be long before the extension of rail services down that way becomes a REAL issue

That's something that always annoys me, how they spend so much time cramming in houses in new developments and they don't stop to think about public transport, parks etc.
If building a housing estate wasn't such a business and wasn't about money (i know, they always will be) then these things wouldn't get overlooked.

The developers are so greedy that they can't bear to get anything less than the maximum they can possibly sell for.
And have you seen how much property costs now? Upwards of $300,000 for a block! That makes a rail or light rail reservation very expensive to plan in.
Please don't get the idea that I approve of this - I don't.

Hehe... it is a good idea to get Intercity trains, however refurbishing the hitachi's could be good, but their life wouldn't be as long as new trains.
