Travelled on this last weekend. It is highly recommended- the railmotor brings back a lot of memories. It's hard to believe they closed that line down. Full marks to the volunteers who have restored the line. Wouldn't it be great to restore the line to link up with the ACT part of the line at Michelago. You really would think it would be worth Countrylink's while to reopen the line during the ski season- the Monaro highway is very congested.
Train's the way to go yeah

The problem is bloody bridge after Chakola and few crossings that were sealed. Don't know how much would be needed to fix that but is probably out of CMR's capacity.

I think I said this on another thread...
Slap a tax on the highway travel to the snow. Maybe a toll, or added to National Park Pass, or tax the fuel outlets on the way. Use the money to open up and revamp the railway... and extend it right into the skifields.
I would be a huge bonus to tourism.
Just needs a real enrepreneur to get it going!!

This may be (probably is) off the topic, but there's already an extra fee for Kosciusko NP - day rate is about twice that of most parks, and there are 2 options for anuall passes, one without Kosciusko for $60 and one with Kosciusco for $80.

Well they do need to make some money to pay for the National parks and wild life and then the greenies have a face that they can complain to when there not causing trouble to everyone or trying to endanger peoples lifes all for nothing.

it would be great but as i understand at the moment the canberra tourist railway cannot even run to its end of the line due to bridges that need repair and if they cannot even fix them how are they expected to pay for kilometers upon kilometers of line bridges let along road crossings which would probably need flashing lights installed. ? It would be nice but you have to be realistic there are many lines that would be nice to have today

I would just like to say, there is no reason to open the section from Michelago to Chakola. There is no viable market for any of the ski traffic, and Coomas not close enough to the mountains anyway. It's also too far for day trips for the tourist market. In reality the only reason to extend operations from the north (Royalla to Michelago) would be for the ARHS Dinner Dance trains as an alternative to running to Tarago, but this would have a larger maintenance bill. There is a possibility we may run railmotors to Michelago though.
